Open Faced Reels

I have two open faced reels that have a serious tendency to unravel a tremendous amount of line during casts. I have have replaced the line and the this problem still persists. Are my reels worthless is there something else I can try?

One is a cheap and new Zepco Genesis and the other is an old hand me down SpiderCast SCS10

Make sure you have at least a 1/8" of exposed spool. Most people tend to overfill them and that sounds like a classic case of what is happening to you.

That would be my first guess. Also the brand of line used can have a big variance on line memory/shooting off rotfl.

When Berkley Vanish first came out I spooled some on a spinning reel and it was awful. I am always careful not to over-spool but that stuff was terrible and it was supposed to be low memory.

I tried some recently and seems to be much improved.

I'd bet you are dealing with line twist-spinning reels are nortorious for this. The best way to deal with this is from a boat-let the line trail out behind the boat with nothing tied to it as you are running. The second method is to take it outside, grab the end of the line and start walking. When you get to the end, reel it back on using your fingerts to keep it tight on the spool. It will untwist as it comes through your fingers.

Have You Adjusted The Tension Of The "brake" To Where When You Click To Release Your Line It Drops Slowly And Not Fast?

be sure to buy quality line aswell that might be your problem, for mono i recomend trilene XL smoothcast, has been the best mono ive used. havent used flouro exept as leader and for super line i love tuff-line by western filament, cheap and strong.

That does that matter? It doesn't matter what brand open face you have as long as you don't fill the spool too full with line.

It's a matter of the reel and brand. I've really never had problems with line twists but with my open reels. I bought some Stren 10 lb. and used it on my Phlueger bait-caster and works fine but my friend used the some spool of Stren 10 lb. on his Open-face and had some serious problems that day of fishing.
