Default 25 yamaha Help

I have a 97 model 25 yamaha 2 stroke tiller with NO owners manual and am getting ready to change the lower Unit oil. Would you guys recomend the walmart penzoil or super tech or should I drive the hour and a half to the dealer to get some Yamaha stuff or can I just use gear oil? What should the weight of the oil be? Heck what ever happend to oil is oil?

Thanks in advance.

This is what I've been using, Pennzoil Marine SAE80W90.

yammers use 80-90 lower unit oil. how ever yamaha uses a funny nozzel end -you NEED this- to fill the lower..buy the pump which cost more but worth the money in the long run..

how ever i use amzoil synthic.and belive me it is worth it.

amzoil will work with 10% water in it. plus it will gain you an extra 100+ rpm at your wot speed..

take your prop with the moter out of gear and spin it it will spin 1-1.5 revolutions with stock 80-90 oil. change to amzoil it will spin 3-4 full times. there is that much differance in the oil alone..

i'd go with pennzoil synthic if anything else..

I have owned 3 Yamaha and have 2 now. I converted to Penzoil fully synthetic marine products with the first on years ago and have been very pleased. Just dont fool around until your lower unit freezes if it has water. Yamaha are also lower unit seal sensitive so make sure you dont have any leaks. Fish2win

It doesn't have any water in it. I bet the motor don't have 20 hours on it. I used it a lot last summer but I just didn't run it that much. What do you mean by seal sensitive. You talking about where you put the oil in and the vent. Also can I just use the squirt tubes or is a pump system required.?
Thanks guys,
bP

If your gonna go with the squirt tubes, I would get a couple extra, because of slop.

Hey Zooker,
I am getting ready to oreder enough of that amsoil to do both my rigs. I also have an 06 optimax 150 on my big boat. Anyway, will that 7 dollar pump from bass pro fit those amsoil quart bottles or should i order that amsoil pump?

In case it does not fit, you could transfer the amzoil to a container that will fit your pump.
