Jerkbait Rods
Do y'all favor any certain rod types for using a jerkbait (length rating etc)? Thanks in advance

For hard baits I use a 7' ML AllStar saltwater popping rod-bought it by mistake and discovered it made a great jerkbait rod. For soft jerkbaits I use a 6-10 H action Falcon Low Rider.

I go against the grain on this one, I used a 5ft 6 shimano pistol grip for my rogues...I always seemed to skim the top of the water or the side of the boat with a long rogue rod...just my personal prefence.

Because of my physical stature (5'6") I have a Shimano 6'3" MH casting rod for all my hard jerkbaits and stickbaits. The 6'6" MH I used to use gave me the problems zooker was talking about regarding keeping the rod out of the water. For soft jerkbaits (flukes) I use 6'6 MH spinning outfit.

Actually, just today my 6'6" mh rod tip snapped off while I was fishing. It's about 5'10" now. I kept using it any way and caught three on a suspending jerkbait.

I use a 6' med action BPS crankin stick. Lots of tip action with good back bone.

Bassnman, how does your crankin' stick work with crankbaits? I was thinking of picking one up for my baitcasting reel and using it to throw my mid range cranks . . .

Being 6'1" I would really like to try a shorter rod than the 6'6" one I use. It's all wrist action, and just like walking the dog, I hate wearing myself out casting baits LOL. Of course if they're hitting, I'm in for the long haul, no matter how worn out I get. But I don't seem to be so worn out when I'm catching Bass.

The crankin rod works fine if you use a med action. Casts well and has alot of flex. I stated earler that I use med for twitch baits but that was incorrect, I use med light. The crankin rod works well for crankbaits in the med action. Has alot of flex and casts well.

kicker no way is an abu gracia rod is near any thing like a fenwick rod. i have both. abu's have a more limber mid section. where as the same sized fenwick-of the same action- has a stiffer mid section both have a soft tip. i prefure the fenwick because it weighs less than the same lenth/action abu's.. i have 5 abu's and more than a dozen fenwicks.

I don't understand why people always compare their height with the rod length. Short rods=better casting accuracy(at any persons height) for short distances with spinnerbaits/crankbaits , Long rods=longer cast, better action/control/backbone from a greater distance(at anyones height), or heavy cover at short distance particularly with jigs and soft plastics.

All rods of a certain length
are not always the same in the way they are built, flexiblity and backbone. Go to a good tackle store with 500 rods lined up for sale and start bending the tips or middle, you'll be surprised in the difference that some manufacturers make in their rods. |

it throws of the action when you hit the water and if your rod is in the water it is harder to set the hook on a fish
