Default Ugly Stik

What is a good rod length that will go well with a spinning reel?I don't want one really long.I'm about 5' tall and 12 years old.

depending on what you want it for, a range of 5 ft 6 inch all the way to 7 ft could be the ticket..a average lenght is about 6 ft6

I fish plastics a lot and jigs and some other things, but I would say I probably fish plastics the most and I use jigs a little, but I just might want to start using jigs more.

Nope. Medium would actually be the regular. If you will be using plastics and jigs, I'd think Medium heavy would be better than medium.

Should I use med. or medhvy?I bought some 10 lb. power pro so my excuse is that I want a rod and reel to go with it.

Austin-if you are going to be fishing worms and jigs on it I'd go with a medium heavy-more backbone for a better hookset.

Lightning rod is the way to go.... I'm just getting into fishing again since I was a little and wanted a decent rod for the spring. I went and looked around a bit and the Berkley was the first to catch my eye and it seemed nice so i bought it. After researching a bit now I'm very glad I did since it seems to be very highly rated. Ive used it about 4 or 5 times in the week or so I've had it and its working great. Its SOOO much lighter than my friends ugly stick (go for the graphite) and its just a realy good and cheap pole

Welcome to the forum, Breene!

I have to agree with the Lightnin' Rod. They are excellent rods for the price. Given a choice between an Ugly Stick and a Lightnin' Rod it would be on contest-go with the LR.

If your looking for a jig n worm stick, get your self a 6ft6in Heavy Action. St Croix makes one. Sure it is a broomstick, but you want the power to rip that hook into the fish. Also 10 is way to light. 30 lb minimum on braid for me, I snapped 65 before on a hookset. My current jig flicker is a 7ft 6in Quantum Tour Edition, Quantum Accurist PT, Power Pro 30lb line. Im flicking All Terrain GrassMaster Jigs 3.8 oz without a problem.

You'll get the best selection shopping online, or a local tackle shop or Bass Pro Shop would be other good places to look.

Being that you are 12, then Walmart or Dick's or any other sporting goods place should have a reasonably priced rod. I would avoid Ugly Stick if you are going to use this rod for mainly bass fishing. I also would have to disagree that a 7' rod for you, whom I assume are mainly going to be fishing from shore would be to long. You will buy plenty or rods down the road, but for shore fishing, and your height I would go with a 6' rod. If you are trudging through woods, bushes etc... like I used to do, then I would even suggest a 2 piece rod, to make carrying it easier. Thanks for the post, you just brought back a awful lot of really great memories for me.

Austin, please pay attention to what these guys are saying. If you get an ugly stik for bass you will regret it.They are a great rod for a lot of different types of fishing but NOT bass fishing.Go with the lightning rod.Unless your like some of the others we've had here that ask for advice and then go completely against the advice given. You would be considered a time waster in that case.
we're trying to help.Tell us what you finally bought.

Default Ugly Stick

I'm 5'8'' and have a 6 ft Ugly Stick spinning rod. I have another one that's 6'6'' I use for one of my bait casters. Tight Lines...

And that's fine PAB.Welcome by the way.But if you started using other rods that were designed strictly for bass, you would notice a big difference in your fishing. An Ugly stik is a well designed all purpose rod.Of course this is just my opinion.

you can catch anything from a crappie to a 50 lb. catfish with an ugly stick what tom is trying to say is that they are not bass rods. there are much better bass rods for the money.

Thumbs up Ugly Stick

I bought an Ugly Stick when they first came out,I guess it was the early 80's .( When I was a kid )6/6 MED.action.That pole went through alot of fish,....trout,Bass,large catfish,Delaware river shad, and alot of abuse.I still use the very same pole today for bassin, mostly for finessin.(spincasting) But in my opinion, the Ugly Stick is a good all around pole,I agree,It doesn't have the back bone to rip a hog out of the brush, but its a good starting rod. Austin, when your in the store, take the rod in your hand, and whip it around a bit (dont hit anybody in the head) If you like it, Get it.
Let us Know.........Good Luck >>
