I got this from a magazine but it seems to work. i took my jitter bugs and drilled a hole on each side of the metal lip, it creats bubbles and more noise on the retrieve.

the lip changed from metal to plastic and then back to metal because of metal rationing of metal during war times.

Lizards said it best.
And you wont see many fishermen on tv using a lot of fishing baits that have been around for a long time, they are sponsored by fishing brands, those brands want the fishermen to use the newest baits, to advertise. Plus the jitterbug is a very popular [yet not exclusive to] night fishing bait. I went out a long time ago and bought the biggest black jitterbug i could find[not getting into the double jointed ones] and whenever i ahve a chance to night fish i rig it up... i swear i've got hits using it that have sent water 5 feet easily into the air, just havent got the hook up yet.. :/

when i messed up my wrist. the jitter bug was the only top water bait i could use.. the jointed ones are like a jointed crank you have to use them very slowly.. zooker

jitterbug-hole in lip
i have a jitterbug with holes in the lip. the holes look factory made.
any ideas on this? did arbogast make jitterbugs like mine? i dont know. (lip being the aluminum in front of the body that creates the warble sound) |

Never heard of holes in the lip, how many are there? It could possibly be a prototype, maybe the company put out a few to see how they did... i'd imagine the holes would reduce the woble effect because water would be allowed to go through the holes. But what do i know?

FlaChristopher,
Regarding your torpedo question. I've had my best results throwing it out and letting it rest until the ripples from the landing subside, then twitching it gently in rhythm. I usually will use the same rhythm for a while and if it is not working or it slows down then vary it up a bit. I have had success with single twitches or pops with a several second pause between and just as much success twitching and popping as fast as i could (almost running like a buzzbait ). It depends on the conditions. Experiment with different retrieves and the fish will let you know what is working that day.

I have an idea to slowly troll around my lake with a Jitterbug well behind the boat using my trolling motor just to see what happens. Very early or late in the day when all is quiet and still. Might be interresting.

Just tried a jitterbug for the first time in my life tonite and i'm 14. OMG it was amazing!!! Nearly every other cast resulted in a hit. It is a jointed green Jitterbug. For those who have not tried one yet, get one and fish it early morn and late nite.
Good Luck -LL-

I use pike size jointed jitterbug with great success. Bigger jitterbug means bigger fish.

I fished with my Brother on Lake Martin on the morning of the 4th with a Black and white Jitterbug and had some amazing strikes but I couldnt ever get them to really take it. I figured the problem might be that back hook is a little short so I put a Split ring and 1 Size Bigger hook on the back and I havnt missed a fish that hit it since.
