HEY gf3 THIS IS WHAT USUALLY WORKS FOR ME WHEN FACED WITH A DAUNTING TASK. fIRST TAKE ALL THAT STUFF IN FRONT OF YOU AND PUT IN AN OLD BASEBALL CAP, COVER IT WITH TINFOIL AND CAREFULLY PLACE IT THE FREEZER, AND STOP SHAVING. NOW FOLLOW THESE STEPS TO THE LETTER
#1 PLACE 3 NAVEL ORANGES, A PHONE BOOK, 2 BEEFSTEAK TOMATOES A RAW PORKCHOP, 2 PINTS OF SMIRNOFF, A PACK OF MARLBORO LIGHTS(BOX) AND A CHANGE OF CLOTHES IN A TRASH BAG AND SEAL IT UP WITH A ZIP TIE. PUT THE BAG UNDER THE SEAT OF YOUR TRUCK
#2 GO TO A TRACTOR DEALERSHIP AND GET AN OLD TRACTOR TIRE, BRING IT HOME AND PUT IT OUT IN THE BACK YARD.
#3 EVERY NIGHT FOR THE NEXT 30 NIGHTS AFTER EVERYONE IS ASLEEP SLIP OUT AND URINATE IN THE TIRE.
#4 (STICK WITH ME THIS IS THE CRITICAL PART) AT 11:45 ON THE 30TH NIGHT GET THE BAG OUT OF THE TRUCK, PUT ON THE OLD CLOTHES, THROW THE FRUIT AND CHOP AWAY, POUR THE SMIRNOFF OVER YOUR HEAD AND LET IT RUN DOWN THE BEARD YOU SHOULD HAVE GOING BY NOW, FLUSH THE CIGS DOWN THE TOILET AND SET THE PHONE BOOK BY THE PHONE.
#5 NOW GO OUT TO THE TIRE, POUR SOME GASOLINE ON IT AND SET IT ON FIRE....WAIT UNTIL YOU GET A REALLY NICE BIG BURN GOING AND THEN RUN BACK IN THE HOUSE AND GRAB YOUR PISTOL AND A FEW ROUNDS OF AMMO.
#6 NOW DANCE AROUND THE TIRE (COUNTERCLOCK WISE) WHILE FIRING THE PISTOL AND SHOUTING DEEP CLEAN! DEEP CLEAN! REAL LOUD
#7 THEN GO BACK IN AND CK THE YELLOW PAGES FOR FISHING REEL SERVICE.

What type of reel is it, and how far do you have it taken apart?

Ok, lets get your reel back together first, the little metal piece that you asked about is called a C clip, there should be a groove in the end of the worm shaft that it snaps into. Cleaning the palm side plate can be as simple as taking a clean cotton cloth and wiping it down, make sure you wipe the the brass area that the brake tabs ride on very well, once you have it clean, you may want to put the a tiny drop of oil on q-tip and put an extra light film of oil on it. Worm gears are a source of debate, some like to oil, other like to grease, the primary difference is that if you grease, you are more likely to pick up some dirt or other debris and the grease is heavy enough to hold it there, oil is light and does not pick up debris as bad, but you may sacrifice a little smoothness, and need to re-oil occasionally hope this helps

You do not have something installed correct as the worm shaft should protrude through the plastic piece a little more and make it easy to install the c- clip in the groove on the shaft.

My friend you have a bit of a serious issue, the part that broke is called a pawl, they are very specific to type of reel, not sure it is a good idea to try and use one from another reel, this could cause even more damage, possibly ruining your worm gear. Best bet is to get some help from a reel mechanic at this point.

Unless you have a local reel repair shop that has some parts on hand, I would say you will need to make that trip without this reel.

There are a couple of guys on here that do reel repair, one is Pro Reel, and the other is DVT, I am sure one of them would be willing to help.

If by some chance you'll be coming through Dallas and one of the guys on the board can't help you, there is a reel repair company called Southwestern Parts that could probably help you out.
