You may use it for catfish, but I am pretty sure my ex wife's lawyer had one of those. At least it felt like it when he was done.

This gaff is from the 40's and is spring loaded so when you hit the head of the catfish with the comb looking part it clamps down on the fish. You would bait an area in shallow clear water and wait for the catfish to swim in.

My dad has something very similiar and we don't have cats worth gaffing... I believe he would use it for anything with teeth that wasn't cooperating properly... children included
