Default Choosing a rod/reel

This time of year we get a lot of questions from guys wondering about getting a new rod or reel and how to choose one. So I thought I'd offer a little advice on making the choice.

Regardless of what you are wanting to get there is one thing I cannot emphasize highly enough, and that is:

Before you buy, if at all possible, GO GET YOUR HANDS ON IT!!!!

Pick it up. Handle it. Find the one that feels right to YOU, because you are the one that is going to be fishing with it. I know instantly when I pick up a rod or reel if I like it or not, and I know I am not alone in that.

So........pick it up, find the right one for you, and go load the boat!

I couldn't agree more. Very good advice. Unfortunately, there are many folks who don't have access to stores that offer much of a selection and depend on mail order for thier gear.

No kidding. I live 30 minutes from a BPS and a Cabela's and neither carry many rods I'd be interested in buying.

But good advice when possible Reb!

All too true, Keith and Bubba. That's why I say when possible.

On the plus side, once you find the one that works ordering on line is no biggie. You already know how it feels.

Since I am getting my store going I don't have huge stock but do alot of ordering rods and reels. I tell everyone to do there shopping other places and order it from me and I can get it to them cheaper than anywhere else because I don't have to keep the overhead and everyone wins lol. But yeah if at all possible you do want to handle the rod yourself, everyone has a different perspective and a differnent eye in what they want int their own rod. Good advice very happy I get to read all your guys info it's amazing how much you can learn from this board.
