First, get a rod. Poles are for norman rockwell paintings.
Anybody have any good suggestions? I think there ae several equivalent rods in that price range. I know at Academy they have Allstars and Castaways for around 50$.

Welcome to the forum!
There are quite a number of good rods in that price range-Quantum, AllStar, Berkley. My advice would be to go someplace that sells rods and find one that feels right to you.

I've heard good things about BPS rods and reels. I have a BPS baitcast reel that I bought for $40. It is worth every penny. What do you guys thing about store brand rods? I'm sure they're more economical than some of the name brands.

go to walmart and get ya a combo, but we need to know, are you needing bass euipment? vs. ultra lite for brook trout or heavy surf rod? even small mouth fishing could mean dif euipment vs. largemouth...I am guessing since this is a bass forum, and you live up north, ya mean smallmouth, so I'd recommend a quantum spinning combo, inexpensive and should do the job till you're ready to move up in price range and quality

u need to think about how u fish and hor what before anyone can really tell u which one. theres so many that could be right. like for me i use short stiff rods b/c i fish plastice worms alot. but my walleye rods are like 7 foot and flimsy. so before u buy take into considertation what u fish and how.
