Shad raps, wiggle warts, thundercranks, Hot Nītots, bandits are good affordable baits.

Yep. So are Bandit and Strike King. In the spring I like crawfish colors and the fall shad colors.

Rapala's DT series, floating and sinking minnows also fit that price range. They are also excellent too.

It is good to just use one lure until you master that type lure or technique. Haveing said that ,why would ypu say" I am going to rebuild my motor but I am on;ly going to use a hammer". Why limit yourself to one type bait ? Fish2win

the speed trap is just the name not how you work it. it is a square billed 5-8 foot diver really wide bounce to this bait. catch a bunch of fish on it during the fall i like the white with orange belly. in the spring my favorite color is green craw...very rarely do i throw a red bait of any kind... zooker

Got to have shadraps. I prefer shallow runners, size 7 or 8, in 10 feet or less. I use these year round, but especially have success with them in spring and fall.

I would try a variety of crankbaits ... get a couple different types and see how they work for you. Some shallow divers, some deep divers, suspending, floaters, jointed etc. I like Matzuo, Yo-Zuri and Rapala. I have some Lucky Craft, Megabass and other lures too, but I don't like those as much.

Save up some money and get yourself an LV flat crankbait. You can get a small one, a 200 series or a 500 series. There are a few others, but the 200 is my favorite. Try the American Shad .They do catch fish, better than any other flat crank than I'v seen (I.E. Rat-l-traps, speed traps etc..) Sorry Zook.

umm speed trap is a LIPPED crankbait bassnman. i own several lucky craft lv baits. just have had VERY limited results on them..they are a good bait just not a fish catching machine ya think they would be specilly for the price..
the hooks are the best you can get though.. besides who here except YOU bassnman can afford a 100 lucky craft?? zooker

in spring,i use crankbaits when i know the main forage is crawfish.i stick with red colors because down here in the south the waters warmer and the warm water crawfish have a redish color.zook, you are up north so this time of year the the water there is generally colder so the crawfish take a more greenish hue.during the spawn and post spawn i am not using cranks often, more during pre-spawn and a little in spawn.but rarely in post.i like carolina-rigging big lizards and working them on the beds during post spawn.
