Thunder Storms??
How do they affect fishing? Obviously if the giant sparks of electricity get too near it won't matter because I will be indoors!
We have scattered T-storms predicted Friday and Saturday as part of a 4 day rain. They are quite rare around here and I can only recall one of them last year and don't recall ever fishing in them.

well, from my experience, i am no expert, but from my experience, if you can get to fish right before the rain, or right after a light rain, the fishing increases...Now, during the fall, we had scattered showers here in SC, and me and my buddy was bank fishing, it started to rain, so we sat in the explorer, it rained for about 10 minutes of light rain, and we went out there and caught 20 bass in 10 minutes, no lie, and we had not caught any all day!!! But thats not promising anything, thats just my experience.

My experience
At least in the fall they don't bother the fish. One day in late october I was the only boat on the lake, lightning strikes almost every minute, wind and some light rain. Caught some fish then hit the back of one cove and found a school. 7 fish in 7 casts all good 3 to 3.5 puonds. I'm in California and where I was doesn't get lightning very often.

If your a Cali guy I have a good video for you for a technique that should start happening in late Febuary. I filmed the video in May because thats when I started my show but the technique starts in late Feb. usually way earlier then most think. If you e-mail me I'll send you the link to either watch it or download. I put my e-mail as public on my profile.

i used to fish the river rats circuit on the ky side of the ohio river and always camped at one of the creeks that had a marina and campsites. All those guys used to tell me the lightning spooked the fish, I have no idea if its true or not...we would get rains at night and lightning, but usually just rain during the day if any.
The bite on the river is always tough, and someone always mangages to bring in fish at the weigh in regardless of rain/storms.. Plus all the clubs I've been in will tell you to use common sense about staying out in a storm. If you can see lightning any distance away, even miles, you can get hit, so be careful. |

Thanks for the advice JB. If the sky flashes, I have no plans to hold a 7' rod in the air on or around the water.
I am spoiled out here and if the rain comes down too hard then I will probably call it quits even without the lighning.

ABSOLUTLY LOVE TO TOPWATER FISH IN A DRIZZLE DURING SUMMER OR LATE FALL!!! it actually helps you sometimes to fish during a little rain, heard a fell tell me a long time ago that he PERFURRED to fish durinn a rain. hard, light, didn't matter to him. but i have caught alot of fish during a little rain to drizzle quite a number of times.

I also fish out of aluminum rowboats which is another no no. Love to fish right before the rain or during it if it's not a down pour. It's time to head in if you hear thunder, and get off the water ASAP if you see lightning. Rain is always preceded by a dropping barometer which usually brings LM Bass up shallow. Post rain conditions are the opposite. Smallmouth really don't care one way or the other.

Fishing in the rain is ok, fishing in a thunderstorm is pure lunacy! I have seen first hand how a lightning bolt can kill someone. We were fishing on Lake Fork when a Thunderstorm was approaching you could see the lightening off in the distance and have a 10-count before you hear the the Thunder. We were lucky that we were close to the ramp and got off the water before it got much closer. Another man came flying up to the ramp about 5 minutes after us. When he beached his boat he let out a blood curdling scream. When we got down to his boat, we discovered that his 10 year old son took a lightening right through the forehead and arc'ed to the metallic livewell hinge right behind his head. He was dead and no-one could revive him. The guy said he was running full out and thought that he was ahead of the storm until he saw a bright flash and a loud crash about a mile in front of the ramp. He never let up on the throttle and didn't realize that the lightening actually hit his son until he beached the boat.
I don't take the chance, especially with graphite and boron rods. They are the best conductors going!

Well lets see, this is south fl so about 90% of the storm are thunder storms!m
And I can say that fishing is great before (and during although not recommended if you want to live ) a thunder storm, or any other kind of storm! It's a time of low pressure, and bass activity spikes during this time, how ever the day following a storm will be low pressure, which has the exact effect on fish activity!

That has to be one of the most horrifying stories I've ever heard, Bob. I can't imagine having that happen.

Um in SC the rain helps the fishing or at least i think so, but once we pulled off the lake because the lightning was terrible... it was striking like crazy.... i was scared.... it hit a tree about 20yds from me.

Bassboss, that story was pretty terrible. I was still thinking about it at a couple random parts of the day yesterday. No parent should ever go through that.

Once the Thunder starts, we row and continue to fish close to our boat sections. 1st lightning bolt and we're off the water. If it's bad we just leave everything in the boats and stay in the car till the storm passes by.

The visual was a small burn spot on the boy's forehead and singed and burned hair on the back of his head. You could see the arcing on the hinge (like a weld strike). It stays with you for sure.
For those who do not know, Lightening can travel over 10 miles. That is often greater than the difference that most people can even hear thunder! The best warning is what you can see on the horizon and whatever the weather forecast may be (keep a NOAA weather radio handy).
