I don't think there's anything wrong with writing about something that interests you. In fact, all of my college essays (that I got to choose the topic) were about my interests and hobbies.

I actually did my big research paper for my English class last year on the effects of invasive species to the smallmouth fishery in Lake Erie.

That would also be a great topic for an argumentative essay. Pick an invasive species in your area (or any invasive species, really), and decide whether you think it has benefited the native fish, or hurt them.

I don't know where you're from, but if you don't mind doing something about Lake Erie, there is a lot of great information on the Round Goby's effects on the smallmouth in Erie.

Aquatic Vegetation is a highly contested subject. Recreational boaters don't see the benefits of grass and fisherman understand what benefits grass and aquatic plants have for water.

another topic is the subject of spraying weed control or not to spray. pros and cons of that would be a very nice read. what kind of impact would it have using chemicals in the water and so forth.

another is the subject of outboards on the water. wakes and waves manmade in how it effects the shoreline.

"Marketing - Catching the fish vs. catching the fisherman" could make a good argumentative piece. You could use ton's of visual aids.

Possibly Google Scholar. You'll want scholarly articles. Not just stuff the average Joe has written.

Talk to you professor about an online database of science journals. Most colleges provide their students with access to one. Like here in Ohio, a lot of the schools use www.ohiolink.edu.

There should be lots of information on Aquatic Vegetation and Control Methods. I know Missouri Conservation department has several articles and sure other states have information on invasive species and control.
