Default A moment of enlightenment

I went fishing this afternoon with my daughter and watched her getting furstrated. She could get bites, but at 6, it takes a little too long for her to realize that the pull on the end of her line means to set the hook.
Since it was around 2:30 pm and the sun was bright, I had her switch over to my frog rod and work the pads, algae and high hydrilla.
The hollow bodied frog is perfect for her. Her natural delay gives the perfect amount of time to let the fish get a good bite on the frog. I was relegated to the official caster, but she was responsible for three out of the pads and top water algae. The biggest was a decent 2 lbs with the rest in the 1 and 1/2 slot.
Only once did she need me to give it a good tug when the fish buried itself.
I had a little fear factor at the thought of something taking my rod and reel to the bottom if she couldn't muscle it enough, but she was a true trooper.
No pics because she still is not too fond of the whole touch a fish thing.

I love it! Man, every time I see or hear something like this, it makes me want to put up with a woman long enough to have some kids to teach to fish!

cass wasn't it you that had a wonderful experience with your wife and a frog about a year ago? i still love that story, and laugh my butt off telling it to people.

great job of finding a way to let that girl catch some fish. i am already looking foward to fishing with my son who isn't due until the first part of october.

That is awesome. Hats off to you for taking your little girl with you! I too have feared the loss of a rig since my daughter claimed my old greenie curado as hers when she was about 6 1/2. She has since taken my Curado D as her new reel too.

I devised a solution for this however to ease my fears. I call it a rod leash.

This is what you would need:

Shoe lace, caribeaner, Shimano rod wrap or velcro.

String one end to the reel foot, the other to the caribeaner and the caribeaner to the rod wrap/ Attach it to the hand that casts.

Here it is in action with my little girl.

She's wielding an 8'6" salmon rod, jigging in some deep water in the Puget Sound. This is my only right handed casting reel and we both prefer left hand retrieve, but our LH bass reels wouldn't cut it out here.

There is one case that has the potential for some danger to be aware of and that is if the line gets caught on something like another (moving) boat. The leash is not going to break away and the person might get pulled. I will be working on ways to make it break off for that rare case in which it is better to lose the rig than the person so that the leash breaks off. That is a very unlikely but possible scenario. Other than that, the leash works great!

Maby try attaching the rope to the wrist strap with some 20 lb mono. Could work?

You sure its not them that can't put up with your over-analyzing/engineering self?? I know that women have that problem with me!

The only bad thing about the leash is if shes gets a BIG one and it pulls her in the water!

I am sure that it can be made with some form of break away material. Enought to keep the rod from diving to the depths, but not enought to pull the kid in. Either that, or attach the leash to the boat/dock rather than the kid.

Cassidyta,

I agree with you on that. Perhaps 4-6# mono for the leash?

Anyway, keep her fishing with you. My daughter was about 6 in that pic and she's now 9 and doesn't care to fish much with me anymore.

Thanks to everyone for their kind words!

Now if we can just come up with an idea that keeps us fisherman from falling out of da boat. LOL

Heck, 30 lbs Vanish should do it as well.

Seriously though, I think if the whole leash was a light mono, then it would be suspect to nicks and getting tangled. I was thinking about just suing the mono in a loop to attach a D-ring to the velco strap
I am actually leaning to attaching the ring to the boat itself.

that is better than a human being cass. for real this would probably go over huge with charter capts. think of how many rods and reels they would save. some drunk guy out there fishing with an expensive set up and OOOPPPPSSS, sorry capt. would put a stop to alot of that right?

It is all the idea of island bass, so I can't take the credit for it.

I would say that to turn it into a serious concept, there should be a way to put the leash into the base of the reel. Perhaps a cap that fits onto the end, like one of the weighted ends for balance. If the line could be coiled inside and out of the way, it would be more marketable.

Idea has already been commercialized. When we fish offshore the rod is attached to the boat. Or when it's definently a bigger size fish it is then attached to the person via a harness and then depending on the size of the person, the harness is attached to the boat.
