Does this swimbait make my mouth look big?
Do any of yall throw these big swimbaits? I won't hesitate to tie on a #13 Rapala or a 12" worm but I just don't have much confidence in these but I'd like to.

I've thrown some Sebile 5" baits, nothing as big as that thing in your hand. I've not had success with Sebile baits at all, trying both the magic swimmers and the crankster's yielded nada.

Yea I've got a couple of the 5" majic swimmers and boy do they look great in your hand and in the water but after several hours spread over several trips where I knew big fish were cruising and active....bupkus?? Hard to figure.

I have a buddy that throws some of the 8-10" wooden plunkers, Matt lures, etc...I just can't do it, even after seeing some serious blow ups and 9-11 pound fish. He fishes all day for 1 bite. I don't have the patience pr confidence for it. And throwing those 4oz baits can wear you down quick.

I throw some 6" Hudds and 6" spros but nothing that big. A really big bass in Kansas in my book is anything over 7 and 10's almost never happen. I guess if I was really after a state record that would be the way to go but it's just not practical and it's expensive.

Other than someplace like cali, the musky up north would love it,such lures wear one out tossing, and in more ways than one, like another said waiting for that one bite a day.
Also cant afford 147 dollar swimbaits even when marked down to 133 dollars yeah they do look real would make more sense as an art object Last edited by lilmule; 11-06-11 at 09:35 AM. |

Okay, so the "monkey" bit hard, and I went ape-sh*t on the whole swimbait thing all in the hopes of just topping my personal best(8lb.10oz.) and possibly taking local lake and state record LM(11lb.3oz.). Went all out with three new set-ups to throw the big baits, and after lurking on some swimbait dedicated sites to get the inside scoop, it seems there are really only a half dozen or so baits that these guys are throwing. Huddlestons, mostly 8" @ $24.99(one in each R.O.F.). Lunker Plunker 6"-8" @$25-$40. 3:16 wake jr.@ $60+, 22nd Century Triple Trouts @$50-$75,Spro BBZ-1 @ $35 and Mattlures various types @$14-$40. So after making the commitment, and only nailing some nice Tiger Muskies & 15lb striper, losing some expensive baits, I'm starting to waver...I come here and there is little or no talk about swimbaits(ever notice how much swimbaiters are like fly fisherman too?)...is it worth it, because in reality some of the "joy" of fishing is gone?

Think you will find the vast majority that toss 60 dollar large baits like the caustaic trout are mostly out in california and dont have toothie critters to contend with.
Spro bzz1 can be had for half that 30 bucks and simple rubber mr minnows $5 do work well on bass and less expensive when lost, also made in same sizes 5-6 in anyway. That pic above is a lure like the bzz1 4 in and 5 bucks, works like a charm, just no huge hogs as schooling fish, does a larger lure always guarantee larger fish no generally guarantees no small fish. And for larger the rubber ones work quite well. I caught short 13 -14 in fish this fall with tails of 5-6 in shad sticking out of their mouths,so ya never know. Get so large here only thing that will eat them is large catfish and stripers,so dont toss 8-10 stuff normally. |

@lilmule...I have a ton of those smaller swimbaits, those pictured and Spro shad, trutungsten tru-life, osprey talon, ect...but not really in the same class as an 8" hudd...but if you listen to these swimbait guys, they just swear buy 'em, and contend that the big baits are the only way to consistently target and catch the biggest fish.

Most of those swimbait guys are so focused on BIG bass that the only "joy" they expect is the result. I will say that for about 7-8 years in the 80's I was convinced that a world record bass existed and could be caught in S. Ga-N. Fla. During that time I fished almost exclusively with big live golden shiners (8"min up to 12") and 6+" live bluegill. The technique was very simple...10 lb mono a-- 8' flippin stick--2/0 tru turn hook---no float---no lead. Nose hook bait --let out line-- leave reel in free spool w/thumb on spool-Drift across deep water---line begins to scream off reel----engage reel--point tip at fish till line is tight---set hook. The point of all that is that big fish can be targeted. Oh btw obviously didn't catch the WR but I did catch lots of double digit bass including my PB of 14-6. And it actually was fun..I enjoyed castnetting or catching the bait and keeping it alive and all that stuff almost as much as the fishing part. I know there are people with a low opinion of live bait....I've heard terms like "cheating" "lazy" etc. All I can say is they quickly changed their tune after spending a 12-14 hour July day in the boat with me>

Slightly different angle, but what about soft plastic paddle tail swim baits? I've had success with a swim senko. I just ordered some Keitech Swing Impacts, and I'm looking forward to the chance to give them a try too.

Just wondering, I thought very heavily about going the route that you did, but its cheaper(my pockets could be a bit deeper, but oh well) for me to try huge flies up shallow and over deep water, and stick with jigs and smaller swimbaits under $20.

Fly rod is definitely the best way to sight fish for big Muskies in the spring, last spring it was just too muddy. Good Luck, see ya around.
