Default Terminal tackle for cranks

I read that when tying crankbaits you tie directly to the line esp. with Rapala. In flipping thru the Fall edition of Bassin there's a picture of a Storm subwart on page 23 that's attached to the line with a small stainless steel clip.

Are there certain cranks that I can use a clip on the terminal end or what's the deal? Your comments and opinions are appreciated.

You can use a duo lock or other type of fasteners on any of them but it is best just to tie a polamar knot to the split ring, cinching the knot down away from the thinner part of the split ring.In my opinion, adding more components into the equasion adds more posibiltiy for error or failures to happen. if you decide to use an alternative system here are a few.

Berkley not a knot.I have used this years ago. It works well except for threading the wire through can be a pain in the butt due to the S bend in the wire.If I remember right, you loop the line on the hook bend , then wrap it around 6 times before sliding it under the wire to the back of the fastener.

Norman speed clip. I have used them but I did not like using this system.I don't remember why I didn't though, so it must have been a preference thing.

Duo lock fasteners. I use them for rigging trolling flies when downrigger fishing but I still choose not to use them for bassin. They work extremely well for connecting leadered lures to a rotating flasher system.

I use these for almost all my cranks. And even some towaters.

I have used the smallest ones and they don't seem to impede[is that the right word?] the action of the bait. They are hard to open if you have very short nails though...

A couple crankbaits have clips with them. If you don't want to use the clip then tie a loop knot.

When I use a knot, I normally don't use anything special like the loop or Rapala Knot, I just use the improved clinch.

Haaaaaaaaaaaa.

I don't know what the loose loop knot is called , I call it the Jimmy Houston knot.It is where I seen it first used.It works well but you don't need to use for every situation. Ivan

Most crankbaits come with a round split ring on the line tie...very few don't. Like Zooker, I switch the round split rings out and install the oval split rings so that I never have to worry about my line getting into the weak spot of the split ring or getting pinched where the wires in the split ring end (instant line cutter)

The oval split rings are way cheap and you can get them here.....

I just tie directly to the split ring with a Palomar knot... hasn't failed me yet...

I like the Terminal tackle for cranks simple and universal with a Crane Snap Swivel tied with a Palomar knot plus 2 half knots if using power pro type lines. Crane Snap Swivel are some times cheaply made but if tempered steel is used they are pretty reliable.. plus switching to plastic is a snap..

im a palomar knot user too,so that makes bout 3 of us that are strange.i have got pretty good with the palomar knot and could probaly tie it as quick as i could undo them clip things.and i mite add i have never lost a lure or any rig using this knot because of knot failure.

I like the Norman speed clips. I remove the split rings from all my hard lures. I change baits frequently and really don't like retying each bait. I've not had the clips fail, and I usually retie the speed clip after a day's fishing so I'm ready to go next time out.

I just use the palomar. And I replace all the round split rings on my hard baits with oval ones, mostly for convenience of not tying off on the thin part

I use a #3 Duro snap for my deep water cranking simply because I'm switching crankbait too often to want to cut and tie, I also use the same snap on one spinning outfit that has to multi-task. And I tie my leader to the Duro Snap with a Polamar knot. Tied right, it's almost indestructible.

Zooker, I use a palomar knot but not a polymar knot so maybe you are odd ( )

PnJ,

I agree with your thoughts that a knot tied directly on the ring is the way to go. The more you add, the more likely there will be equipment failure. Also, the lures action can be affected.

I will not use clips...they are weak and will open up sooner or later. I tie right to the split ring and make sure you don't tie in the split. Some split rings I replace because they are weak.
