Rod grips
Okay, all of this rod/reel and bait monkey talk has me looking and then wondering.
I know many people have said that they don't like the BPS rod grips. I am seeing several rods with the split grip. What is the purpose/advantage to that style grip?

CASSIDYTA,
I think one of the pro's had a rod made like this and a bunch of tyro's thought 'Gee whiz Mr. Wizard, maybe if I had a rod like that everyone would think I was a "Pro" Then the rod companies jumped on tge band wagon to build them. The problem is that it makes the handle lighter and upsets the balance of the rod. So you have to put up with an unbalanced rod and work harder to fish it, or add weihgt to the but of the rod to balance it out, which negates the whole idea of making the handle lighter! BUT YOU LOOK COOL, in a Roland Martin way!!!!! JackL

i like the grips on the bionic blades just comfort i guess. as for the split grips they suck. and roland martin can keep them and his helicopter lure.

Disadvantage of Split Grip
I like the added leverage that you gain with the LONGER handle pressed up under your forearm when going after those hawgs. imo

For the most apart, I agree. Most split grip rods are tip heavy. Unfortunately, most brands have now adopted the split grip as the blueprint for all of their new rods. Even the less expensive Berkley Lightnin' Rods have split grips now. |

whine whine whine dam i am sick of it...if dem prissy lil fellers and there ultra light fairly wands.. look if they want to fish with a 2 ounce wiffle stick then they need to focus on CRAPPIE fishing...
i came here to BASS fish i WANT a stick with back bone enough to haul a fat fish out of a lay down. one that is sensitive enough to feel her fart on the bait. or one that will allow a crank bait to work the way they are designed to... i WANT a reel that is smooth to cast and smooth to retrive.. i DON'T give a rats left azz how heavy a rod is or how dam much noise a reel makes either on the retrive or on the cast...if you can't fish all day cause your rods are TOO heavy fer ya.. i got one thing to say to ya WORK OUT!!!! ok rant over NEXT!! zooker

Aw, come on, Zooker-tell us how you REALLT feel!
To the question, it all comes down to personal preference.

I have a couple BPS rods, and the hump grip is alright. I wouldn't say I hate it, but i probably wouldn't buyone again unless they got rid of it.
As for split grip, I do split grip handles. They are supposed to make the rod lighter, which they do slightly, but I also love how they look. BB

Split grips started in the custom rod building community to save on cork (becoming very expensive when buying top end cork - atleast $2 a ring - and save on weight. The light higher modulus graphite blanks, combined w/ lighter titaneum guides and a split grips makes a lighter rod equating to more sensitive and easier to fish with all day.
Then some tourney guys bought some customs on the water and the rest is history. A few rod manufacturers made split grips back in the day, but they never caught on. Guess it took some guy on TV to make the manufacturers start producing them. Now I see split grip handles everywhere. A properly balanced rod with a split grip handle will not be tip heavy. Rod builders usually take the reel the angler will use into consideration when building. With all these factors together, a rod builder can build a well balanced rod for the angler. All my rods I build for myself are Split grips (and most have TN handles). Not one is tip heavy. |

hahaha zooker. as for as the rel making noise...i like it. see in my mind the sound travels down the line and gives off a humming sound for the bass. maybe i am crazy, but that is my way of thinking.
