Default Rogue Rod Question

Hey guys,

I wanted to get a new rod, just for fishing plastic. I will primarily be fishing T-rigged but wanted a little bit nicer rod for it.

Bass fishing isn't big around here and after looking at our 5 sporting good stores, I have not been able to find a MH rod yet. Finally I remembered they make Rogue Rods about 15 minutes from my home.

Here's the web address to Rogue Rods... http://www.roguerods.com/magnumbassrods.htm

Would any of you be kind enough to browse over there and reccomend what rod you would use for fishing plastic? I don't want to have a bait casting rod, but they make every rod with a bait casting version or spin casting version.

I was thinking the MB664 but I don't know what the action is supposed to be.

Thanks guys for any help you can offer.

Aaron

I have a few Rogue rods and really like them a lot. It sounds like you want a spinning rod if I read your post right, so that would preclude you from the MB series. They are all casting rods. The MB664 that you were asking about should be a medium heavy, and would be great for throwing soft plastics if you decide you want a baitcaster. I would actually go with the MBH 664. It should have a faster tip than the regular 664. Rougues power rating are a little on the light side compared to my other rods(Loomis and Lamiglas mostly). I have a MB 665 which they rate as heavy, but it really fishes like a Med Hvy. It is awesome for blades, traps, and jerkbaits. The 664 should fish like a Med power or a little heavier.

If you want a spinning rod I would steer you toward the SJ 663S or the SJ 703S. The 663 is 6'6" and the 703 is a 7 footer. They should both be excellent for tossing plastics. The only difference is the length. The longer one will give longer casts and more powerful hooksets, while the shorter one will be better for working in tighter spaces and easier to cast accurately. Your choice there.

My preference for all my plastics and jigs is baitcasting gear though, unless I'm working really small baits on pretty light line.

I would go with the C 604 C from the web site you showed us. It is a bait caster, and I do not assume you want a spinning rig. If you do then I would question why you want MH action from a finesse rig?

Although there are alot of times when the spinning rig is the way to go, for overall bass fishing and especially for using plastics these days, I don't use anything but a baitcaster.

AiRRUS Rods & Shimano Reels are an excellent combination.

Good Luck

Here's the thing. I'm pretty new to bass fishing. I'm going to get serious about it this year but still don't know much about it. Most of what I know is from what I read on this site. Some how I thought going MH was the right thing to do.

As far as the bait caster v spinning, I can get a bait caster since the two of you are saying it is primarily the way to go.

I got a bait caster last year and I didn't think it was anything great so was planning on going back to a spin cast set up. Maybe I'll just get more famuliar with the bait caster and I'll get to a point where I prefer it. The one I got last year is a Pflueger President. Not the greatest but atleast average.

One last thing for clarity...If I will fish nothing but plastic with this rod, I should go with a Medium rather than the MH?

Thanks guys for the respnnces.

I 'd pick the MBH 704C Magnum Bass Rod 7' 0"

baitcasting only tho, if you want spinning it may differ as mentioned above..however many a pro uses spinning most of the time, don't be pressured into a baitcasting outfit if you think spinning would be easier and suit your needs better...most of us used spinning outfits for years before we really got serious.
A baitcaster is a useful wench for worming, it just takes alot of time and practise before you'll prefer it over spinning...and as always, each has there own usefulness when throwing various lures.

Last year I picked the
MB 764C Magnum Bass Rod 7' 6"
It's almost the same as the MBH 704C Magnum Bass Rod 7'0". I use it mostly for throwing Spro frogs and Hannon's snakes. That's the one that I have the Pflueger President bait caster on.

The whole point about fishing of course, is to have fun, we all start of with tons of excitement and anticipaton and get deeper into the sport or find something else to satisfy our needs. If you think you may wanna get into bassin big time, then get the baitcaster and a better than average reel and you will eventually see the advantage for overall fishing with the baitcaster. I use shimano reels mostly due to the fact that I personnaly believe their spool breaking system is easier for us non pros to use and get comfortable with. For what you want to do fishing with mainly plastics, the Medium Action rod will be just fine for you.

If you think you may just go out now and then, and are happy to catch a fish here and there, stick with the lower cost spinning gear and make do with that. Either way, the point is to have fun and enjoy the sport. You can do this with either set up. The cost is up to you.

Good Luck and Enjoy the experience.

Rogue rods are sweet to a point. Let me expand on that a little. They "USED" to make the blanks for Kistler rods. They no longer do, not sure how long ago Kistler switched(I think 2-3 years ago). There rods are sensitive, and priced great for what you get. The one and only downside to them is they are a little more brittle than many other rods, and will have more of a tendancy to snap, especially the first few feet or so from the tip. Now I actually own 2 of them, and both have the tips broken. I still reccomend them, just be careful with it. Now as for the spinning/baitcasting issue, my first thought is how do you fish? If you fish more open water, and less shoreline cover, than the spinning would be my choice. If you fish cover/shoreline then the baitcaster does alow you better control for stopping a bait, or placement. That is after "A LOT" of practice. However if you are wanting to use lighter baits then the spinning would again be my choice, especially if you want to skip plastics. I use both, but anything weightless I use a spinning reel for. These are just my opinions, and everyone has their own opinion.
