Default Do you loosen the drag

on your reeels while they are in storage? I read that was good for them. It makes sense.

You should back them off about halfway, just to the point that line pulls off easy. You don't want to completly unscrew the star as far as it will go, it's possible that if the star is too loose, internal parts can slide out of alignment.

I always loosen mine when in storage. If you are going to do this, make sure you always remember to tighten them back up before you start fishing again.

Some reels such as most shimano and some Daiwa reels have a keyed top drag plate. The sleeve that goes through the AR clutch has tabs that fit into the slots on the drag plate. If you completly loosen the drag star on these reels, and the reel gets jarred or bumped while it's loose, that sleeve can pop out of the slots. You would think that it would pop back in when you tighten the star and crank the reel, but i have never been able to get one to pop back in without taking the reels apart. The other thing that i have seen with any reel is that there is a ratchet gear at the bottom of the crankshaft that has a square hole to fit onto the crankshaft, It only takes a little too much slop in ths stack for that to pop up and catch. If that happens, it's also a very slim chance of getting it back in place without opening the reel. Don't let this keep you from backing the drag pressure off between uses, that is important, just loosen it halfway to where you can easily pull line off.

I owned a few of the old Ryobi reels. They had paper drag discs. Never realized it until I could not pull line off at all. Seems I had gotten the inside of the reels wet and destroyed the paper drag discs. Funny how some of us have to learn things the hard way.

For the most part those who fish all year round don't need to but those who ice over in October should.

Nothing better than setting the hook and hearing that drag sing and then watch that fish roll at the boat and spit the bait on your first day back on the water in the spring.........and then it be your only bite of the day !!!

I usually loosen mine quite a bit, even between running to a different fishing spot. It is just out of habit. I am also going to keep mine a little bit tighter now.

I try to. But rarely do, lol. When I store them for a long period of time though, you bet I do!

Reels that have felt washers I'll back them off more than the reels that don't have them.

I back off my drag all the way. I keep 4 rods/reels in my car all the time (all shimano baitcasters) and they have the drag backed off all the way and I've never had an issue.
