Default Hopping up Garcia Silver Maxx

I just bought a Abu Garcia Silver Maxx at wally world , just to see if I can " hop " it up...meaning adding bearings where my Revo Primere has them , and if possible changing out the drags for something better ? I think that would be cool. I am going to try my hand at it. Any knowlege here appreciated..

The silver max is dang near as good as the Revo already. You might opt to upgrade or your Revo ?

Buy Hybrid bearings for both and leave the drag in the silver max alone. The Skeet Reese model has the bearings that all of the Revos should have had for the price of them.

Then if your serious, look at the line pawl assembly and see if you can get an upgrade for the silver max.Ceramic would be a great improvement. P N J

Getting back to where I was before I was interrupted having to leave for work. Bearings are not created equally. There are many different grades of bearings and there are same grade bearings but with different maximum revolutions per minute capabilities. Then there are hybrid bearings using ceramic ball bearings instead of stainless steel which makes them more rust and corrosion resistant. The problem is they are still normally contained in a stainless steel race cup so it sort of defeats a bit of the purpose there. They disapate heat better and can be more consistant in uniformity that stainless steel bearings are.

Another thing to improve reel performance is to wax the inner ring the centrifugal weights ride against. and wax the spool shaft if your reel has a fixed spool shaft.Do the Rebbasser bearing process and use a quality oil when lubricating your bearings.I don't like Quantum hot sauce. Its only my opinion.I use Ardent reel butter.Imho,I think it works better than hot sauce and is priced about the same.

One thing to look at is what type of material is used on the line pawl eye where your line exits the reel.I like ceramic material or titanium.Your lower priced reels may or may not have quality materials as the higher priced reels might have. P N J

Thanks pnj , I understood about half of it. Anyway , the silvermaxx is really no where near as good as my Revo STX's or Priemere , just my opinion. I will look into your suggestions. I think this will be a fun experiment and I will get to know reels better , and if it doesnt work , no big loss.

The type of materials used in the reel components is the difference. If I remember correctly, it goes as gold max, silver max, black max.Gold max having the better grade reel components added, thus a larger price tag. There is a big difference in bearings .

CMorg, You probably won't get the silver max to the STX level for it uses a infini spool design .That design was first used in the Torno HSI reels. It's designed for the spool to turn on a bearing in the center of the spool.Great design providing the bearing doesn't get contaminated.I have yet to figure out how to take the infini spool bearing out of my HSI Torno to clean and lubricate it properly.I am not up on the premier reel and probably won't unless someone brings me one to clean for them. leave the max mostly alone. You could change out the handle for an after market one. But that's the only upgrade i would do. If you want to do anything. Other wise out, of the box it's not a bad reel for the money.

37.95, You have to slide the bottom bar over to the right to see the price.
