Deep cell care
Well, I ain't doing something right. Every year I end up buying a new deep cell battery. I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong, if anything, but any help would be appreciated. As I understand it, I'm supposed to charge the battery after every use and never leave it in extreme temperatures. Somehow, I lose the water toward the end of the summer and have to re-fill it. Maybe this is normal and this is a useless question taking up electrons on the board? Can any of the fine folks here help a pig out?

Pig, You will save money in the long run to invest in a sealed deep cycle battery. One like an Optimax is hard to beat. When I bought my boat it came with three deep cycles and I don't know how old they were but I couldn't get them to hold charge for long. Let me tell you it any no fun after about a half a day of fishing to have to ask someone to give you a boost or even worst pull you back to the dock. I've been there once and it was once to often. lol

DJ- You're probably right about the sealed cells. I just got through hooking up a couple batteries for tomorrow knowing that at least one will lose it's charge pretty quickly. I haven't done much research yet, but are the Optimax the same as the gels I hear about? Thanks for the input!
I probably should have posted this on the boats board. Sorry about that folks |

Piggles,
You've been offered sound counsel here. If at all possible obtain a "serious" battery and pamper it. You'll be money ahead in little time. Now, about YOUR cell...Sweep every day. Dust around the bars. NO porn pics on the walls (I don't care if she IS your cousin!). Be courteous to the correctional officers. In the showers, keep your back to the wall and DO NOT drop the soap. We'll drop by on Visitor's Day. Hang in there. Lancer6 PS: A select group of us is looking after your cousin...takin' REALLY good care of her. (I had no idea she was so limber!) |

Standard wet cell batts are more in need of care than sealed ones are of course but there is a few things you can do. Keep the batt clean and yes charge as soon as you can after using it. Make sure your charger goes into a maintenance mode. If you dont have that type charge thats why you are burning them out. Plus the fact that during normal usage you will charge out so to speak some of the electrolytes. Before hooking up the charger and making sure its one that goes into a maintenence mode top off the cells with distilled water. The battery loosing some fluid during usage is normal. Just dont let the fluid level drop below the plates or you burn the batts

I've been thinking that for quite a while now. If you go back and look at some of FR's old posts, they are pretty similar.

i agree about the jell batteries as well. i have wally world batteries, they last for about 2 years. but after a year, the sun in summer drains em prettyquick. one day i'll get the good batteries.

Thanks for all the help. I did get a new charger recently that has maintenance mode so that might help. Since the batteries go in the back of a V-hull, they've been seeing their share of sun. Looks like the charger and sun were the culprits. I'm making a Christmas list now with a couple gel batteies on it. Thanks again.
