If they are just for the trolling motor then they should be deep cycle. If you are using them for both purposes, then dual purpose.
From my understanding deep cycles are not designed for the fast, high current drains such as starting an outboard. They specialize in draining slower therefore lasting longer with lower, more consistent loads such as a trolling motor. |

Deep cycle. They would be running for a long time at a fairly low draw, so getting deep cycle batteries would help them last longer.

typically you should run all accessories (bilge, livewell, etc) from ypurcranking battery and for that use a dual purpose. Itshould last many days and if you are running the gas motor a lot you may not need to charge it much at all.
The trolling motor should be the only thing on it's batteries. You will get the maximum out of those batteries and at the end of the day if they are dead you can still start the gas motor because you didn't run that one down. |

Is your trolling motor 12, 24, or 36V? Even if it is 12V you might want 2 batteries just for it depending on how much you use it. You can wire two batteries up in a circuit to achieve either 12 or 24v if done in series or in parallel. For 36V you need three batteries.
I would put the lights on the dual purpose cranking battery. As for the charger I'm not 100% sure, but I don't think that you would want more than 10A per bank, but a 2A will take a very long time. Other than that I don't know of a special one for deep cycle batteries but I could be wrong. I have an on board Minn Kota one. |

Ok, so i have room for three batteries, i have a 12 volt trolly motor, livewell, and bilge pump, and a 82 150hp evinrude.....should i get one starter, one dual, and one deepcycle...i say one of each is because maybe the dual could be used as a backup for both of them..or should i go with a different setup...i know i am asking alot of questions but i want to know as much as i can before i go spend more money....thanks you guys...and i especiall don't want to end up stuck on the water..

That sounds like a good setup.
I also have a set of jumper cables onboard just in case. |

If you buy a new boat today and it comes with 3 batteries it will have one cranking/dual for the starter and everything else, then 2 batteries that are 100% dedicated to the TM.
If the cranking/dual battery dies you can always use one of the TM batteries for a while. They will crank the motor fine, they are just not designed to do it all day. IF YOU ARE WIRING IN THE BOAT MAKE SURE TO USE FUSES/CIRCUIT BREAKERS AS CLOSE TO THE BATTERY CONNECTION AS POSSIBLE. Yes, I was yelling, you do not want a boat fire. |
