Question about "read this and learn" thread
How many on here have means of getting back in their boats that do not have the pull out step or a ladder attached already like some of the newer model boats have?
The tread by Zooker about a bad incident got me thinking if I could get back in my ranger boat in this cold water in a hurry if I were to fall in. I don't think I would have much time in Jan. or Feb. when I start trying to get one of Docs, Lowrider and Mont Lunker 10 pounders. I done a lot of crappie fishing in icy or pretty cold weather but that was confined small areas always setting down and not big open water. I may think of making a rope ladder or some type of pull up aid and have it tied to the rear of the boat and have it where it coud be reached and pulled over the side if needed in cold water and stiff or cramping muscles. This summer I will play around and see if I can come up with a handy aid. Any ideas out there. Be safe, and wear your PFD.

i don't have a ladder on my ranger either and a bass boat is very difficult to pull yourself up into when it is warm out and you are wearing swimming shorts so i could only imagine trying it wearing heavy clothes in cold water. i have always went to the back of the boat and climbed up the motor, can even hit the trim button and take the "elevator". it's probably not as good as a ladder but i have done it and it does work fairly quick.

Great thinking C-RIG 01. You never know who this may help at some time down the road.
Even an rope aid made to go over the caling/housing of the engine cover, to be able just getting on top of the prop area to where you can then trim up the motor and aid in getting in. With that idea a rope tied to the rear ancor tie of the boat going over to the motor caling/housing with drop down runners with rope steps. Something may be easy and I sure would be happy if a reader were to read this information and it be a great aid in a possible dangerous situation-me included in the future. I may get some of our water rescue trained and our heavy reacue trained guys get together with all the rope knots and ties they use and see what they may suggest for an aid in getting back in the boat in very cold water in a hurry. I just got an idea. My two Chev vans has this cargo net I guess put up in the very rear of the van when having grocies back there. I have one of them on my Yamaha 400 Big bear for hauling in deer or hog and straps them down tight with the six hooks, but why would that not work like marines clinbing up the side of a ship. I will need to see the thoughness /strength of the hooks but even with heaver hooks that might just hang out the back and be great for toe and hand holds. I will try that first. Keep the ideas and experiences coming, it may save a life down the road.

Every boat should have them I think, I only see about 1 in every 100 boats that has them, usually a skier in the family I guess.
Also, we all need to wear life jackets when running and have them available on the seats or wear them if you cant swim. |

I do believe that most bass boat manufacturers now offer a type of emergency ladder that can withstand the force while the boat is up on plane.

The elevator idea I like. Im primarily upfront. I have my launch rope on one side, very easy to grab. The other side is my TM, not the best, but I have used it on more than one occasion. The only other advantage, I have attended the water survival instructor course.
