Default Got to try out my first baitcaster today

Sorry if there alot of typos. I'm posting this from my phone.

My abu Garcia black max came yesterday so I went out to a small lake to try it out today. I'm in love. I'm suprised how much more comforatablr and effecient this is compared to my spinning reel.

But I do got some questions.

1. According to the fish and game officer talked to last week, this lake had a late spawn. Matter of fact from shore you can see Alot of 3-4 inch bass fry still moving around in packs of 6-9. So even though it's late summer. This lake is acting like just post spawn. Any good ideas for tactics?

2. Everything I threw today came back to shore with a pound of salad. Cranks, jigs, spinners, and t-rig worms. In such a situation where there is just so much vegetation. Should I just stick to top waters or deal with hauling salad to shore all day.

3. All my catches today were on a blue/black jig with black craw trailer. I got a decent LM bass, a blue gill, and then a weird catch. I got a 5 inch bass fry, with the above jig, but the hook went in his side, right in the lateral line, through his body, and out the other lateral line. I was shocked as it snags him right as the jig hit the water. I felt bad but was pretty amazed too. Ofcourse didn't bring a camera.

Thanks for help guys. Man I love this forum.

With that much slop on the water, I'd first be rigging up a weedless frog like a Spro Frog or Bobbies Perfect Frog. Also, I would be wanting to t rig a 4 inch beaver bait with a 3/8 - 1/2oz tungsten sinker pegged tight to the beaver. That little combo slips down through the vegitation very well as there are few appendages on the lure. I do very well with this lure settup. I just pitch it to openings in the weed canopy or I'll allow it to punch right through to the bottom. Also, I'd want to try working a soft jerkbait like a Zoom Super Fluke or Strikeking Caffeen Shad. T rigged weightless, it will work through most weeds and slop with minimal hangups.

You from a boat or on land?

I'd try the beaver like keith said if you're from a boat, otherwise it way be a little hard from shore.. The frog sounds great to me too! Fish it where the weeds are matted are real close to the surface. A baby bass colored 5" senko will probably also produce, wacky rig it, or rig it texas with no weight. Use a weedless hook (like with a weed guard) if you wacky rig it. Also a again with the fluke or caffeine shad (I like the caffeine shad better), both weightless or with a very light keel weighted hook.

I'd say on land.

BN, glad you like the baitcaster, not just be ready for the money to want more and better ones!

And Keith's recommendations are spot on. And sometimes just dealing with the weeds is what you gotta do.

A good lure is a 5" Senko (or any knockoff, I like the Yum Dinger) rigged with the smallest bullet weight you have (preferably 1/16oz). It's just to make the setup come through the weeds better. Also, since EWG hooks can catch weeds, try rigging it on a 5/0 straight shank or flipping hook.

I am relatively new to baitcasting myself. I have to say I am impressed how far these things can sling a lure! I can't wait until I can afford a Curado. Dave

I'm with BigBassin on this one, I would throw weightless stick worms, if they want a little faster fall, I would use a 1/16th oz bullet weight. Pegged or unpegged is a matter of preference, and I would see which drug in the lesser amount of salad.

Revo rebels stay away. This one is mine!!!! hahahaha. I am with the guys on the frog. But if they won't bust the top... I am taking that since you have a lot of veggies in the lake, it is relatively clear? I would try a watermelon plain or with red or blue fluke too.
