Default extending a power wire on a depth finder

I just bought a humminbird depth finder for the front of my boat. Naturally the power cable running from unit to the battery is way too short. Are there certain gauge wires I need to use to correctly splice to lengthen the cable? I probably need a good 10 to 12 feet more to run to the battery. Thanks

The first thing that I would do is contact Humminbird and ask them. They probably make a cable that is long enough or I would think that they should. I would be afraid that a "homemade" cable would void the service agreement for the unit. Which unit did you get? Please let me know how you like it.

Just thought of something. A lot of boats (bass) have a power source on the front of the boat you can get to. What kind of boat do you have?

Extending the power cord wont void the warranty. While doing this be SURE and add an inline fuse of 3 amps. 12gauge wire is plenty.
