pee stream
I have a 2001 Merc 125 HP and the tell tale stream does not always have the same pressure exiting the motor. It has never over-heated or anything like that but it seems strange that the volume would change. It has done this since day 1 and the dealer said it is normal with Mercs. It always has flow but sometimes much stronger than other times regardless of RPM's.

at an idle my yamaha thows out a stready stream not much pressure. but when i have it hooked up to the hose at 1/2 throttle there is ALOT of pressure coming out of the pee stream.. if you are saying you have in consiant stream pressure. this is a tell tale sign something aint right in the water pump..

Ok first let get rid of the myth bought being normal with Mercs. I aint never heard of such a thing. When at idle you should have enough pressure that you are actually "denting the water" from the pee stream. When running as rom's increases so should your pressure up to a point. There are at times when the pressure will lessen do to water turbulence but as long as you see a good steady stream you are within described pressure's. On the bigger motors that have trim units and are set up to run I STRONGLY advise the installation of a water gauge. A few seconds with little or no water pressure can be or cause severe engine damage. With the cost of a powerhead today $50 for the gauge and 2 hours at the most for the install thats pretty cheap insurance. Second I want to point out that you need to change the impellar at LEAST every 2 years. I do mine every year. Again the $40 or so for a impellar and a couple hours is cheap insurance. If you havent had yours changed since new do yourself a favor and change it. Its very easy and straight forward to do.

Thanks Laser. The impellar was installed new last year and made no change to the flow. Maybe I am over analyzing it because the motor always has a nice stream, just stronger at times.

No problem buddy. In all actuality the only time that just looking or feeling the difference in the stream that would be evident is when the T-stats where opening or closing and it would be for just a brief moment due to the change in water flow. From what you are posting it sounds like you can go ahead and let her fly.

Do you possibly have sand up there? Its very common to have sand in your pee stream down here. Just take some 150lb. mono and shove her up there till abunch of sand/shells come out and she pees stronger. And dang you guys are lucky only having to change impellers on one motor 1-2yrs!

It could just be a small blockage at the exit of the pee stream and that is why it is causing a different stream. I change my impellar every 2 years and so far so good.
We don't get much debris here in the midwest as most of the lakes are fairly clear. If you run the rivers you can get just about anything. |
