Default new custom jig

Yep, got a new one that I've been working on for a couple months. Here's the deal. Smitty's Knucklehead Grass Jigs. Come in three sizes 1/2, 1, and 1 1/2 oz. The photo is a 1oz jig in what I'm calling Potomac Craw. It's a custom blend of colors I've put together for the river. I'm using a Yum Craw Papi trailer (green pumpkin) and I'm punching milfoil and hydrilla. It isn't on the website yet but will be adding it sometime soon.

I've been working on a couple custom skirt colors too that are based on the VDGF crawfish chart. Out next will be Smitty's Knucklehead Skirts. Still got some work to do on those. One that's working really nicely right now is the custom shad pattern I've been using on my buzzbait and chatterbait (I've posted a couple pics of the shad skirt already).

I like those heavy jigs for covering deep water and flipping trash piles. They bust right through easily.

I like your jigs.

I've got a couple in 1/4 oz but you'll have a hard time punching grass with 'em. Plenty of jig companies out there that have them in the lighter ranges 1/8 - 3/8.
I'm specifically looking to fill the 1/2oz and above and specifically for punching grass mats. There are very few companies in the 1oz + range, none have this head design, and I don't think they will custom make a skirt for you either .

Robbie - I haven't tried these yet in deep water and brush. I've got another company out of NJ that makes 1oz + jigs for that. Completely different head design.

Heaiest I use down here is probably 3/4 ounce, and thats for the nasty stuff. Mostly flippin' 1/2 or 5/8.

I have not done much jig fishing... if you get into the heavy mats and get a fish on... I have had a hard time keeping them on while battling throught the junk...

Tips in that area?

Make sure you get a good hookset. Once you get them hooked up you either get them up on top and coming to the boat (heavy gear is needed) or you have to go and get them. If they bury themselves in the grass then go get them. You'll lose them if you don't. If they're down there shaking their heads in the grass then more than likely you'll lose the fish.
Some guys prefer braided line, it cuts through the grass, but others like heavy fluoro. It's a matter of preference. Right now 25lb Big Game is cutting through the grass for me.

Couple of photos of the sizes and some skirt colors (cell phones don't work well on close ups). The 1/4 oz (brown head) PBJ skirt has a small Craw Papi on it. The 1/2 oz (black head) skirt is Potomac craw. The 1 oz (brown head) skirt is Anna #1. The 1.5 oz (green pump.) skirt is also Potomac craw.

3d,

Thanks thats what I figured. Do I dare admit this... last night I was fishing from shore.. and my normal shore spot (havent been there since last year), was covered in heavy mat.

I had what appeared to be a big fish hit and then i set the hook... I tried to get her through to the shore and lost the fish... I more than once thought about walking right in to the fish.. and probably should have.

Anyway thanks.

A friend of mine lost a couple in the 8lb class down in FLA fishing from shore and lost the fish in the grass at the edge of the ponds. It's a tough way to lose a fish!!!

I like'm smitty. In heavy current water like mine they could be a real asset. If you want a honest fair opinion of them. I would be gladly & willingly test them on the missouri River.

Don't know if they have it on a website. They handed out posters this spring. Shows all of the different species of crawfish in the state including the invasive species. Check out VA Game and Fish and see if it's online.
