Default Jigging

Hey my names Nick and i've been around fishing most of my life but I did'nt get into it till about 2 years ago. But my question is, What is the proper technique for jigging. I only recently began to use my first jig and i've had no luck with it.

The lake I fish is in the back of my neighborhood and its a muddy 9 acre lake, on one side theres a bunch of cypress and on the other side its clear, Ill have to post pictures. Im using a Booyah Jig Brown and purple skirt.

I agree, in muddy water the black/blue colors are my first choice. I save the various green brown colors for very clear water. Also, I prefer a smaller weight jig such as 1/4 and 3/8oz for most of my jig fishin, and use the heavier 1/2oz and up for punching through heavy vegitation or water deeper than 15 foot.

Bassassasinator,

Those two websites that Bama was referring too, can provide some great jigging tips and techniques.

bassassinator, i am sorry. thought you were looking for jigs too. lol. but these are not that expensive either. but remember this with any bait. you get what oyu pay for . wait........ not quite right am i gang, i meant to say that in MOST cases you get what you pay for. another dollar can make a difference in quality a lot of the time.

and yes those 2 sites can give oyu a LOT of jigging tips. as well as kevin's videos. these videos ahve helped me TREMDOUSLY. i haven't been able to fish a lot this summer. but come this fall and as many times as i can this winter (when it ain't too cold fer me old bones), i am going to do a lot of jigging. and thes are the jigs i use. ONLY these jigs. they are THAT good in quality and performance. look at the sites man. they will help you out pal.

Keep trying new retrieves with it and you'll catch a few nice ones and build some confidence. Try a slow drag, 3" hops, 6" hops, 12", 18" etc, or all of the above in the same retrieve. Don't forget the pauses in between and be ready for a strike on the fall, even when casting in open water.

Jigs can be very intimidating at first. Stick with the basic colors and sizes and work on retrieves and WORK IT SLOW. Black, brown, white with hints of color like chart, orange or blue. You don't always have to match the trailer with the jig. Sometimes contrast gets a few more bites. One of my staples is a 3/8 oz. black/blue jig with pumpkinseed/green fleck Power Bait Chigger Craw trailer.

I love to jig, always have one tied on. I have discovered I do not like to use premade, dressed jigs with the weed guards and skirts. I prefer to use a couple of different types of jig heads with a plastic trailer. Most of the time I like to use the smallest ( by weight) jig and trailer combination that will get the job done for the day. I prefer 3 colors Brown, Green or Black. I like jig heads that have a small screw or hook , to attach the plastic to the jig head.
Slow Drop, or I drag and pop them ost of the time seems to do the deal
