Well I have been trying to catch one for 2 years. Their mouth is like a rock, and very difficult to get anything into it. I do have a pole rigged currently I take now, that has a piece of nylon rope tied to the end. The gar will supposedly get their teeth caught in it, and you can reel them in. My first choice however, as soon as I talk to the owner again, is going to to bowfishing, if he allows me to. They eat a bunch, and are good for nothing IMO.

pfft 20 lbs? guppy let em grow to atleast 120 maybe 220 i got a buddy that snagged 1 in the MSriver 244lbs thats a gar son they aint good for nothin its realy fun to bow hunt them lizard thats the best way to do it but make sure u dont arrow 1 too big dont want a 220lb gar attached to ur bow i promise AMS makes a rig we use for gators and big gar its 20yrds of 640lb line attached to a bouy that pops off ur bow when u shoot that way if u dont make a good head shot u can follow the bouy and try for another or drag em abord also a gars head is REALY hard so higher poundage bow and good aim or body shoot em no meat to mess up so...
also gigin them is fun or even hand grabbin u can sneak right up on them innapaddle boat get them around they head about at the gills and hold on again dont do it with the realy big ones duh?
my cousin gabed 1 that was like 5-6 foot long and it drug him out of the boat
i never took much to that nrope trick take a good strong leader like 30lbs+ and mono
tie 3 treble hooks bout 4 inches apart from one another and put somthin shiney on the midle one it dont matter what it is it can be a gum wrapper or a spinner blade jus so its shiney or cut bait w/e u prefer gum is easier to get than cut bait (tastes better too) the objective is to get the line wraped around his snout not too hard they tend to roll or some thin then they hit ive been perch fishin 1 hook like lil gold hook wrap around his snout and catch the line and tighten through his skin and catch him any way the treblle hooks shout work or get you a 6ft broom hand or somthin of the sort and put u a fish gig on is and stic em stick em good though ne way gar aint goodd for nothin but braken line and stealin baits ill post pics on that inna min

sniper, i wouldn't say that they are good for nothin...down here in louisiana, anything over 20lbs tends to make a good meal..lol...most people wont eat them but if they are cooked right, they are really good....we mostly make gar balls out of them...mmmmmm

Thank goodness we don't get any 220lb gar LOL. The biggest I've seen is about 4 foot long. They just eat my bass's forage, breath the bass's air, take up my bass's spots along the cover, tear up my baits, and just look plain old ugly and nasty. Almost like a snake fish, maybe that's why I can't stand them.

Southern,
You guys eat some strange stuff down there I was at a real cajun crawdad boil one time, in New Orleans, on my way back from the Honduras scuba diving. First off let me state, I don't like spicey food, or at least my belly doesn't LOL. That stuff made my eyes water, and I was sweating for 3 hours straight. Good thing there was plenty of beer. I was also amazed at even the McDonald's was selling beer. I bet it's hard to get much done for work there, with all the drinking you need to do, just to keep the fire in check.

lizards,
the nylon rope will work...you just have to make sure that your in an area well populated with gar...otherwise it takes forever...as for the spicy food...i still have'nt gotten used to it and i live there..lol...and yes it is a shame about all the beer i "have" to drink to wash it down...lol...

I havent been down there lately. But Lizards I have gone to a crawfish festival in Biloxi and they have so much good food. Well at least to me. Grouper, shrimp, redsnapper, and of course CRAWFISH. They had the race on the big screen there and we just ate crawfish and watched the race the whole time we were there. .............................................. I can third that. They have grenal(bowfin) tournaments here and they are so much fun. Just tie on a crankbait with a small wire leader and chunk away........................
