Nets
I don't watch alot of Fishing Tournaments on TV so I'm not really up on the rules but...It seems that when watching some Tournies almost everyone is using nets to bring fish into boat. Others never use a net. Not anybody! Is this due to rules or expertise or what.
Now, how many of you use landing nets? If you do, how do you decide when to use or when not to use? I know the walleye circuts they all have thier favorite nets. Similar to having line preferences. Yet I never hear bassers talking nets. Do you have a favorite brand or style? |

I always carry a net, as you never know when you will hook that 10 lb catfish or something. For treble hook catches too; there's nothing worse than getting a crankbait hung into your hand by a bass that just "looked" spent, but decided to splash a little more when you stuck your thumb in its mouth.

Never used to carry one but after a night time walleye that I thought was a nice bass, I don't leave home without it.

Always one in the boat. Some of the lakes I fish have toothy critters. Also would hate to lose a nice bass without one. You can lip a bass but hate to handle other fish and their slime.

Well, I think that BASS states that you cannot net a fish in the Elites, or at least you never see them net any fish. But watching a few guys in the Opens, they were netting fish??? In FLW, I believe they can use nets though.
As far as using them... on a longer cast such as a crankbait, spinnerbait, jig, carolina rig, or a big worm, myself or my fishing partner in a tournament has time to grab the net, then it gets used. But if we are flipping and pitching, or making shorter casts, and it takes more time to get the net, the fish is already at the boat and I usually just swing them in. I feel comfortable swinging a fish up to about 4.5 pound that is hooked with a single hook bait. Anything over that and I usually grab the net, everything else gets flipped up into the boat. Ryan

I never have a net in my boat but only because I'm fishing from such a small boat and space is a prime concern. I lost a big pike earlier this year because I didn't have one. But I now have a gaff for those in my boat. Takes up less room in the boat. If I had more room I certainly would. It seems to me there was concern about harm to fish from being netted and loosing some of their body slime. Never was sure I believed that one.

I believe in the BASS tournies that the pros fish they don't allow nets but the FLW does. I think they should allow them because swinging bass in and bounching them off the carpet or seats and damage the slime coat and end up killing the fish.
I carry a folding Frabill that takes up very little room but I don't use it very often. Usually when I do use my net it's for a really big bass or something other than a bass, usually the latter. No safe way to really land a walleye and a big hybrid with a faceful of trebles is just about as dangerous. I usually just hand grab the big catfish or grab the small ones across the back when I accidently catch them. |

I think the Elite Series is the only one that doesn't allow nets. FLW and PAA definitely do and the BASS Opens do as well.

Whats the reasoning behind BASS not allowing nets?

It's just one more thing BASS has done to distance itself from us "rank amateurs."
Which really surprises me, as you would think they would jump on any possible product they could market, but sadly no. We will just have to wait for our anodized titanium-magnesium alloy with 80 million modulus graphite composite mesh nets for only $299 each (and endorsed by KVD obviously).

I used to never use a net wanted to be like the Elites…..than one day I lost the fish of a lifetime….i think she was in the dd maybe 12. Lost that fish right at the boat. Still hurts thinking about her. I got a net the next day. After my first net I got another. My 2nd net was a rubber net. This was an important upgrade because a non rubber net is terrible with trebles! I found this out in a tournament when I was on a school of 4 and 5 pounders and I didn’t have a rubber net. My cranks were getting caught in the net and I was having to cut the net or cut of the crank and leave it in the net. I won that tournament but I know I missed out on some fish with my crankbaits constantly getting caught up in the net! One other tip the rubber nets are heavier. I filled the handle of my net with foam (that spray insulation for homes) it made my net float when knocked overboard!

Wasn't the handle hollow and sealed to begin with?
