Rod Building (pic heavy)
I finally got around to taking a few pics of the rods I've built. So far I've done 3, a micro guide casting rod, a composite crankbait rod and micro guide spinning rod. The casting rod is built on a MHX blank and the other 2 are built on Lamiglas blanks. Taking good pics is harder than I thought but you get the idea. I'll do this in 3 posts.
Micro Casting rod: 7' MHF, Mudhole MHX blank, size 4 Fuji Alconite guides Last edited by Jrob78; 03-27-10 at 01:53 AM. |

Man, those look great! The spinning rod turned out wonderfully. You will have to share with me how you build up your finish to match the contour of your grip. Awesome job!

Saved pics to my computer, taking notes and hopefully attempting to copy some aspects of that this week.

Thanks guys! I really appreciate the kind words. I just finished the spinning rod a week or so ago. I don't normally fish spinning rods so I don't really have anything to compare the performance to. It seems to cast really well with the micros and the action seems pretty well suited to finesse applications. This is the method I used to place the guides.
http://www.rodbuilding.org/library/spinningNGC.pdf The top rod was the first one I built, it's the micro casting rod from the other thread. Funny thing about that one, I fully intended it to be really simple and functional but not flashy. The greenish blue thread I used is metallic pearl white. It was basically a white thread. It didn't turn green until I put the epoxy on it. It wasn't what I expected but it kind of changes color depending on how you look at it, i went ahead and added the tiger wrap to it a few months later. WTL, Bubba and CIK, as always I will be glad to help you guys in any way that I can. |

Did it turn that color because you didn't preserve it?

I guess so, I haven't tried any pearl with cp. I don't really like using color preserver because it tends to make the threads milky looking. I always use NCP thread, black and metallics so I don't have to use cp. I haven't ever had any other thread change like that.

Thanks man! I'm really happy with the way the ramps worked out, I think it gives it a nice clean transition. We probably are using basically the same tables, do you guys use those white cutting mats from Drytac?
