where to place a fishing bed

Hey guys. Great website. I’m a newbie and just leaning how to freshwater fish. I was thinking about putting in a fishing bed – like Bill Dance’s porcupine fish attractor – so that I can lean how to catch bass and the little ones can catch crappie and bluegill, but I was wondering about the proper placement. Should it rest on the bottom or should I place it at the height of the normal thermocline since supposedly bass don’t hang out below the thermocline. I boat on Lake of the Ozarks if that make any difference.

what water depth are you looking to fish?? I would say that you should put it in water that isn't more that 15' deep, therefore you wouldn't have to worry about the thermocline. That being said, it would work nicely if you suspended it on a pole or something, I love fishing tree tops where I can.

8-12' would be best since a majority of bass stay in that depth range most of the year. Or so I've been told.

wow. you guys are quick. I'm planning on placing the fishing bed below a floating dock. The water depth is 22 to 26 feet deep, depending on lake level. The thermocline, as indicated on my depth sounder, is normally about 10 to 12 feet below the surface.

Then yes, thats where you should stick it. You may want to weight the bottom and hang it by telephone cable from the dock. It may be helpful to tie some organic material such as hemp rope or similar to the structure to expidite the process of it becoming habitat.
