Screamin Demon
Heh...I just found out my Silver Max reel is nicknamed "the Screamin Demon". And for good cause...the one I have been throwing spinnerbaits with started making a screeching noise when I was casting it. I have taken it apart about 5 times now trying to fix it. I've pretty much soaked the bearings on both sides of the spool with Abu Reel Oil, which has helped, but not fixed the problem. I probably should have taken it apart sooner when it started making the noise, rather than continuing to use it. They're probably just fubar'ed. Anyone know a good place to get new bearings for it? I'm pretty sure we don't have a reel repair place in Evansville.

Good Lord, man. They want $27.52 for two spool bearings, after shipping. Hell, at those prices, I'l just buy another Silver Max, and strip this one down for spare parts.

This is what I mean when I say "You get what you pay for" I think this phrase aplies more to fishing gear (mostly reels) than anything else.
If you're going to replace, don't get another silver max. Get a better reel. If you spend 150 bucks instead of like 50, you probably won't have to buy a new reel in a year (unless something weird happens). BB

144,
I generally agree with your premise that you get what you pay for. If I didn't, I wouldn't have ponied up for an STX and a Toro Winch recently. Engineers get paid pretty well, but even I have my limits on what I will spend on my hobbies. Besides...I think the problem is resolving itself. I took the bearings out again tonight, and soaked them in some WD40. For some reason, the Silver MAx comes with grease in the bearings instead of oil. I have really been letting my spinnerbaits rip, and frankly, I don't think the grease can keep up; i.e., the bearings stop rolling, and start skidding. After the WD40 got done doing its magic, I blew the bearings dry with some compressed air, and then put some Abu Reel Oil on them...MUCH quieter. I'm going to keep an eye on that reel... Besides, I can get another Silver Max and Lightning Rod for 30 bucks...seems like a no-brainer to me heh. On a happy note...I had an old Shakespeare Sigma Supra RT 840 "Long Cast" spinning reel that acted like it was on its last legs. It must be 20 years old. Since I was in such a "reel maintenance" mood, I stripped it down, cleaned it, and re-lubed the bearings. Man, it isn't quite as good as new, but it's about 500% better. I now have another decent trolling reel, and a warm, fuzzy feeling about it.

bryce, just go for the promax instead of the silvermax. not much more and a lot better in the long run. i have 2 pro max's and 1 silvermax, also have a pinnacle finnesse. same price as the silver max.

bryce, As for the grease, most stock reel bearings come packed in grease.
Soak them in lighter fluid, let them dry and then use quality bearing oil. most oil specifically designed for reel bearings is very light, even lighter than standard reel oil. Daiwa puts it in with their higher end reels, but I think you can buy the Daiwa oil. But because it's so lightweight, you'll need to apply it more often than once a year cleanings, especially without any grease. BB

Here's a specially designed bearing oil. I've never used Ardent reel butter, but I'm sure it will work fine.

It's a Dick's Sporting Goods combo, Clint. They're $59.99 in the store, and you can get a $10 off coupon very easy, and then there is a $20 rebate that takes about 4-6 weeks to get back.
However, I'm amazed you want one after you listen to mine scream and screech last weekend lol.

DOH!!! God, sometimes I outsmart myself, or outdumb myself as the case may be here. I figured out what the problem was, and it wasn't the reel.
OPERATOR ERROR!! When I first spooled that reel up, I was having a hard time with the braid slipping, so I used my old spinning reel technique of some electrical tape. Well, I did a Dee-dee-dee...The tape wasn't equally wrapped around the reel...it was very unbalanced at high revs. It never caused that problem on a spinning reel because...duh, a spinning reel spool doesn't spin. Oh well, they say failure is the best teacher. I just wish for once I could learn something by doing it right the first time heh.

It just comes from dealing with Architects, Zook. I have to somehow keep them from painting me into a corner electrically while they are having their fun designing the building. I have to be prepared to tell them on a moment's notice why any idea that comes out of their noggins will or won't work. If I don't think of it instantly, I get the famous "well, why didn't you tell me that before" response the next day, after they've wasted what they consider to be precious time drawing up what they thought of. They consider electrical systems a nuisance at best, only until it doesn't work. Then there's hell to pay. It makes it hard to sleep sometimes, so much stuff whirring around in my head. So yeah, sometimes I do tend to over-complicate things, but if I didn't, I'd probably be out of work. Now go back to ogling your sexy nurses.

I donīt think itīs lack of lubrication, nor the abundance of it, itīs how you do it, oiling a dirty bearing is like no oiling at all.

When I cleaned my 4600C3 this time I did not use a drop of oil!
I used White Grease every where oil was needed. Now I have less bird nests |

Yep...grease will definitely give you more control and probably less wear, at the loss of performance; i.e, casting distance. It's a personal decision. For a heavy spinnerbait...backlashes aren't the problem for me.

It is no longer making noise. It wasn't dirt, or lubrication issues.
