Best older flipping reel? Like 2-5 years old

well,i know that lizardsrule likes the shimano castaic,i think it has been around for 4 or 5 years. i just use a bass pro shops extreme reel,it works. i dont flip alot though.

Shimano Castaic! Why because I love the thumbar, and it's ease of engaging the reel. It's a smooth reel, and I've been hard on them for a couple of years now, and they have withstood all my abuse. Plus the drag system is phenomenal IMO, I lock it down, and it stays locked down.

lizardsrule I have a Shimano Castaic on a flippin rod can you tell me how you adjust yours for flippin? As in how many brakes on or off ? How tight do you adjust the drag. Spool tension knob how fast should the bait drop ? And what type of line and lbs ? As you can tell im new to flippin and have a few questions

i like to have a very loose tension knob when pitching,and i lock the drag down as tight as can be.

You want the line too come off freely almost. Use heavy line and lock your drag down. Get the fish away from cover fast.

I actually use the Quantum AC500PT. I loved it so much, I bought another one from a member of this board.

you have to learn how to thumb the spool just enough,then you will get splashless entries without birdnests.

I have an older curado shimano that is only used to pitch / flip with, and love it, I free spool.
Its held up for 12 years now!

Ken,

I pitch mostly, flipping doesn't require the reel to be used. When pitching you need to adjust your tension knob based on what weight you have on the line

Not to loose as to birdnest a lot. The more you practice the more you'll be able to control the pitch with less tension. As for brakes I keep 2 on, but for the longest time I used 4 on. The drag is locked, man a rhino couldn't pull any line off of it.

I use Powperpro 50lb Braid, and I work the heaviest stuff I can find. I'm not afraid of anytype of cover or structure. If I do get hung up, then I know I'm fishing in the right areas. There is a great video from BPS that zooker reccommended to me, and now I reccommend it to everyone called "Pitching to Heavy Hitters" by Kevin Van Dam. I think it will help most everyone on the basics, and also some improved techniques.

Thanks yall, OPPS I meant to put pitching. Do yall use the same rod for flippin and pitching ? lizardsrule I bought that video a couple of weeks ago, great video and thats what brought up my question about the brakes because he is using a reel that you set the brakes with the dial on the outside and I wasnt sure how many brakes to turn on or off on the Castaic, being you have to take the side cover off to adjust the brakes. Are you able to do that casting where he swings the lure in a circle then lets it go? I thought that was a cool looking cast to try , I bet it takes practice. Also I wanna learn to skip lures like he does that looks awesome!Hmmm wonder if I would get some strange looks practing flippin and pitching in the grassy area at the chruch across the street from the apartment I live in ?

Castaic-hands down. As much as I hate to spend the big bucks, Shimano is the only way to roll. Traded one and bought another a week later, just couldnt go without. Its an excellent standbuy if your other longcasters give up the ghost. Actually my 'staic casts as far as my 200sf and is only a bit short on those new D's.

nope,i dont. i usaully just horse 'em to the boat while my partner nets him. thats why you use 20lb+ line,so you can horse the fish outa there.

nope i have never broke a rod yanking them in.. i rarely ever adjust the drag when fighting a fish. i have had to loosen it up a couple times -blasted cat fish- but for the most part my drag is set differantly for just about every reel i use..

If you want the best flipping reel made on Earth, you will want the Daiwa TD-X reel.Why ?

1. Daiwa made the reel specifically for braided line.It spools the braid in a cross pattern so the braided line will not bind as other brands will.

2. The reel has a magnetic system which works extremely well when free spooling with the spool tension knob.

3. Its the best reel Daiwa ever made, its bullet proof.

I use 3 older Daiwa TD1 Tournament reels, but they are older than 10 years old and are still working flawlessly.They were discontinued for the TD-X line up.I have owned both, but I am old school,absolutely love the ugly old TD1's for pitching, I hardly ever flip and I never use the flipping switch on them.

My second choice is going to be the new Shimanos with the H.E.G. system and the super stopper anti reverse with assist system. The HEG gearing system has a beefed up side plate design, eliminates any torque binding and the double anti reverse system makes it ideal for most heavy duty tasks.

Lizard, I have that video and I tell you what....KVD makes me sick with that pitch from about 30ft and "slides" it back another 15-20 feet under that dock. I don't know how he does it. I can skip, but not like that. I guess thats why he gets paid to fish and I have to pay to fish.
