Mercury Motor
I just purchased a used boat and it has a 200 hp mercury motor. I was told to use 93 % octane gas. Can anyone tell me if this octane rating is good or bad for this particular motor.

TOPWATER,
Unless the engine has been modified to increase compression, there is no reason to use 93 octane, 86 would do just fine. I would talk to the person you bought the boat from and ask why 93 octane. If it has been modified, I would find out by whom, and contact them to make sure it actually needs Hi-Test. JackL

As Jackl said there is no need to use high octane gas unless the motor has been modified. In fact using high octane gas on a stock motor is dtrimental to the motor. High octane is what causes carbon build up in outboard motors and carbon build up can cause you all sorts of problems up to and including messing up a powerhead. It will cause rings to stick, build up on the valves be it reed valsves on 2 strokes or valves on a 4 stroke. The only motors that do require higher octane arnt available to everyone. They are the motors that come from the factory that are setup to race.
