Drilling holes int your 3600 boxes
I drilled holes in all of my hardbait boxes to eliminate the hooks from rusting.
Wondering about doing it for my soft plastics. But as I think about it, water condensation wouldn't really affect the plastics, would it? |

Almost every plastic will swell if you let water stand in the box. Additionally, you will see your colors run, although this isn't always a bad thing.

Occasionally I buy something that has those little packets of stuff that are about the size of a tea bag, but they're filled with some pellets that keep moisture out or a product or container....Anyway, for grins, I threw a few of those packets in the same 3600 box with my hooks and I've never seen any rust.

So what do you do when it's raining while you're fishing? The water could get into planos with those holes and as a result, start the rusting process anyway. Just teasing.

you need to get some packs of desicant. You can buy them on line or in some stores. Holes would drain a lot of water, but if you have that much water, you have other problems

I would think that would allow more moisture in. I also use the silica packets and the new Flambeau boxes have the rust inhibiting (blue) dividers. I have a couple to see how good they are. My wife gets me the silica packets from work, they are about 2"x1", which do well absorbing moisture in a 3700 box, but it does take up the space of 1 or 2 lures.

Go to your local Pharmacy, When they recieve shipments of pills they have inside them little moisture capturing cylinders. They work on the same principal as the sylica just better. My pharmacist doesn't mind saving them for me, and usually has me a bag full of them. Just drop them in a few of your compartments on your plano boxes and volia. No more moisture. I keep them in my box, bag, and plano boxes.

Rice is a great desiccant.
You just need to change it once in a while, as it can get moldy.

The little packages in shoe boxes work well too.

I never put old hooks back into the same packet as new hooks. I also never put a wet crankbait back in the box. Or spinnerbaits. Or anything else that can rust.
I've spent way too much on good hooks only to have them rust on me. |

Same thing goes with disposable razor blades. If you completely dry a disposable razorblade after shaving, it will not "dull" on you. I have used a single disposable razorblade for 3 months before. The standing water on the blade is what causes it to "dull" and not the hairs on your face.
I try to completely dry my hooks and baits off when storing them back in the box. But sometimes you just can't get it all so that is why I use those pakets out of a shoebox. Never had a hook rust on me when I dry them and put them in with a packet. |
