Look under rocks... probably want to use a dipnet or something as I've heard they bite.

i caught one when i was catchin crawfish for a tank, just rifle up some mud and wait for it to settle it sould come out of the mud like you would expect a snake to come out of a hole, but hes not in a visible hole, just under the mud

You could spend a lot of time just looking under rocks....eliminate most of them and look for thin flat rocks, 12" or bigger in diameter, and are not stuck in the mud. Also slow moving shallow water is better than fast moving water. Pinch them behind the head when you grab them or they'll get you . You can keep them in a small can or plastic container with some water.

This is something that I learned from my father that is now 91 over 40 years ago. It is real simple. Get a piece of screen wire about 1 ft X1ft.Slightly bigger may work better. Hold down stream of moss cover rocks. Take your other hand rub the moss and in general disturb the rock. The Grampas which the mountain folk here call them will be swept free and caught in the screen wire by the current. Works. Fish2win

Fish2win has a good idea, and I've heard basically the same approach but a little differently. Have a friend hold a longer screen, about three foot wide down current as you kick rocks a little upstream. Anything under the rocks will catch in the screen. Some folks put a wood frame on the ends of the screen and put the bare screen edge down into the stream for catching.

Grampas are an incredible smallie bait. Good fishing, Mac

Locally, here in East Tennessee, friends have told me to start looking for Grampas after the 4th of July as before then, they aren't developed enough to use.
