Default protect your bearings

i always put a run of electrical tape over the holes in my wiffle spools to help prevent water intrusion into the bearings.i forgot where i picked this tip up from but it's a good one.apparently water seeps through your wet line down into the spool and into the holes.

seriously??? I recently had a jerkbait reel free spool on me at random times when I was working my jerkbait. It would only happen when it was well below freezing outside though. The reel also had holes in the spool. I wonder if water could have seeped through into my pinion gear and froze causing the spool to come loose.?? Does that sound plausable?

I use reel magic everytime I go out on the water, but thankfully, I don't have to worry about freezing temps here in Houston. The concept about water seepage thru perferated spools and the possibility of contamination is something I would like to hear more about though. Keep us up to date please.

apparently something in the reel magic prevents freezing the trout fishermen use it on the line on the spools and on rod guides to prevent freezing

I used to think Reel Magic was the best-until I tried KVD Line and Lure. If you like reel Magic you will LOVE Line and Lure.

Good tip,Dodge-Never thought of that before.

the tape won't protect it if you fish in the rain...which i'll bet just about everybody here does at times.i'd rather just spray the reels with WD-40 like i have been doing.

Protect your bearings ? I didn't think fishing was a contact sport, you mean I gotta wear a cup while fishing ?
