I love braid with soft plastics.....you can feel every little rock or stick or bump with braid. Never tried it with Spinnerbait, though. I'd say probably 30 lbs test would be a good start.

Braid has it's uses. I don't like it for moving baits, like spinnerbaits, crankbaits, etc. I prefer a co-polymer or flurocarbon line that sinks and has a little stretch built in. Braid for slow presentation baits works wel, and I use it (20#) on my spinning reels for it's limpness which is a big advantage in eliminating the problematic loops on the reel. I also like it (50#) for jigs and frogs with heavy rods for pulling fish out of the junk. Other soft plastics, I go with the co-polymer lines, again because they sink and I think the abrasion resistance is better than braid.
I'm of the opinion braid is very visible to fish so in slow presentations, like plastics, I use a leader (spinning gear) to get by. I don't like adding leader to every set-up for plastics on baitcasters, many will say they are not necessary, so I prefer the flurocarbon or co-polymer to eliminate the need for a leader. Everyone has their own preferences, you'll find yours. I know guys that use braid for everything, but I don't think there is a perfect, do it all line out there. I know what I like for specific presentations and I'll be sticking with what works for me. |

Braid is great for fishing bottom contact baits! It's not the best for spinnerbaits, but it works. I do like it for spinnerbaits around grass though, helps rip em through it.

Well, I guess I will gladly be the odd man out! I use it on just about everything except Crankbaits (and thought about using it there too!). It is great on spinnerbaits and buzzbaits. Used in conjunction with a medium action rod it is a deadly combination. If you use braid at night on your spinnerbaits you eliminate the need for flourescence and blacklights because you can feel everything that is happening with the bait. If you use around pads or grass, your hookup percentages and your odds are greatly improved for landing those fish. I say whatever you do please don't get caught up in the stigma of not trying something because of what someone says on the internet. Try it and form your own opinion! Not being rude here, that's just good solid advice!

More folks ought to try spinnerbaits on braid. I throw my lipless cranks on braid too.

The only thing that I don't use braid for anymore is crankbaits and topwater. I tend to fish some pretty rough water around my parts and braid gives you great feedback on hits in the wind.

A PE line has been on every reel I've owned (both spinning & bait casting) since the mid-90's. Whether i use a mono leader is dependent upon bait and cover.
Different types of line as well as different diameters of line each behave on the reel and fish differently. I want to minimize these differences each time I pick up a different rod/reel. PE lines (with & without leaders) offer me the most versatility. oe |

PE is either pretty expensive or positively expensive. Just kidding but now I'm curious too.

I use braid on everything and if needed tie on a flurocarbon leader.

I didn't cut and paste the article here for fear of copyright violations, but I do know that I can paste a link without violating the law because it is on a public website so here is an article that describes spectra and Dyneema perfectly (and yes these fibers are Gelspun Polyethylene! lol)
