I tie it through the holes in a whiffle spool. No problems at all.

When the braid starts to wear out just reverse it. The braid that was first on the spool is essentially brand new, and no bass will spool you so the old part of the braid acts as backing. Been doing this for years.

Just remember that it is a shoe in that initial color fades away, it does not affect the braid's performance. I don't mind it white and don't change it out unless it is worn.

It seems that there are two definitions people are referring to about backing.

There is the "economical" method where a fair portion/percentage of the spool is filled with mono with the top say third of half of the spool is filled with braid. Depending on the species targetted, I might do this. The ratio of backing to braid is up to the angler.

The other backing is a minimal backing whose soul purpose is to provide the friction necessary to prevent the braid from slipping around the spool. Braid can slip easily without this backing and you only need 20-30' of a mono backing.

Some people use tape in place of mono. It works just as well.

I tried the tie to through the holes of the wiffle spool, but I'm too butter fingers to get it through the holes.
