Default Are you friggen kidding me....Officer?

Well,

I got my first non-military speeding ticket today. I never counted the ones on base anyways.

I was at one of our local resevoirs driving over to the other side. The road can get a little busy on weekends with bikers, skaters, joggers...etc. I passed the cop/ranger and thought nothing of it till he threw on his lights. He then proceeded to read me the riot act and said I was endangering people with my careless driving.

Now for the part I found rather funny but also pissed me off. The posted speed limit around that part of the lake is 5 MPH. Well he clocked me at 7 MPH. To hear him go on you would have thought I was leaving a bank heist. I will go and pay my fine since I did pass 1st grade math and know that the aligator mouth points to the 7 instead of the 5, but damn. It is hard to keep my stick shift pickup under 5.

I would fight that as a patter of principle, likely lose, but 7 in a 5 is fine unless you have a bottle broken up your ***.

I would fight it too...many speedometers are inaccurate to the exact mph and you can at least get the fine reduced. That is friggin' ridiculous...Barney Fife where are you????

I think Foley Alabama is a lot like that too. Right north of the beach so there are always 4 officers lined up on 59 at night. I got pulled over 2 nights ago cause my tag lights were out. Its like a police state, I wish there was some way to check out of control townships like that.

Don't ya see whats happening? the local governments are so broke

I figure I can't really fight it. In CA, the spedometer being off is not a valid defense. Additionally, the court date would be after my new job starts and I don't really want to explain the need to miss work for a court appearance while still on the work probationary period.
There may be a little something to what JB is saying. Out my way the state sent IOU's instead of state tax refunds.
I was not as angry at the ticket as I was the attitude of th eofficer when he was writing it. I also found it funny that I was getting passed by skaters and people on bikes before he even stopped me.
I guess the most shocking part to me was to find out that radar would trigger that low in the first place. I figured it would have to have a higher measurable threashold.

I would go to court and ask when that radar gun was last calibrated...and then ask to see the paperwork. My buddy got out of a ticket doing that once.

This warrants some sort of mandatory driving school upon pleading guilty to the vilolation.Maybe a couple of weekends in jail ? Probable cause for the use of a taser gun ? Talk about being pushed around and your milk money taken............

Forget the calibration on the radar unit...no need to go through all of that trouble. Just have them bring the radar manual to court. Inside it will say that the speeds are accurate to +/- two miles per hour (ALL of the major brands). You are within the manufacturer's tolerances, so you could have been going 5 MPH and the unit read it at 7 MPH.

Trust me on this one...I have spent a lot of time with a hand on a radar switch.

Yes, with a radar gun + or minus two however, what if it was VASCAR?

I'd go in and tell the judge that I was going 7 mph in a 5 mph zone and was being passed by pedestrians on roller blades and bicycles and that I'd be happy to pay the fine. But before I did that I'd make sure I called the local newpaper and tv station and inform them of the ticket and the treatment you got from the police officer. Get your 15 minutes!!! You may make CNN or Fox News. Have some fun with it. Maybe the officer has a history of doing this before. Remember you get to ask him questions too. "Mr. Police officer sir, have you ever written up other drivers for doing 7mph in a 5mph zone?". "Oh you have.....Did you give those individuals the same riot act as you gave me for doing 2 mph over?" "Did you see me getting passed by the old lady with her walker before pulling me over?"

I am going with Nitro's plan. If this is within the accepted variance of the equiptment then it is open and shut case.
