Default Question On Braid Line

I have been reading that when putting braid on a baitcaster that you should put mono on first as a backing. My question is, how much mono before the braid?

Probably 1/4 of the spool. I find my self casting out to the backing if any less within a month. I use 6lb zebco ultra cast as a backing.. 500 yards or so, under 5 bucks... or so!

The mono is to keep the braid from slipping on the spool. If you have a Whiffle spool you can tie the braid directly to the holes in the spool.

If the spool is large, and you want to use a smaller amount of braid, you can use mono backing to partially fill the spool.

Hollow braid is generally more expensive than solid braid, but it can be spliced. That might make it worth filling the spool up with braided line.

I've never had slippage problems on a baitcaster with braid. Although I always use backing now simply to save money on braid. I fill about 1/3 of the spool. Less backing for heavier (50+ lb) braids, and more for lighter (20lb or less) braid.
