paint for buzzbait

Hey Guys I want to paint a buzzbait black because I can't find a black one like the one I want...so my question is what's a good and safe paint to put on the body of a lure such as this??

I dont know too much about painting lures, but i'm pretty sure you can just spray paint it, then spray on a sealer. Let it sit a few days before using it obviously, and then wash it before you throw it out.

If you're not wanting to spend much, or this is a one-off project, then spray paint, or jsut about any paint, really, will work. If you can get your hands on some black fingernail polish, it even comes with a brush in the cap, then after it dries, do a coat of clear polish and rock on.

If you want to get more involved, there are paints made for lead baits, such as vinyl and powder.

Permanent markers are not better....cheaper and quicker but not better....it is only a temporary solution. Follow DP's advice, since he does paint baits, he has plenty of experience.

IDK what your talking about permanent marker is the best. I buy all white spinner baits and i color my own with permanent markers and they last very well.

Denny, when painting Jitterbugs, and Pop-R's all black, I just went to the automotive section and bought some "FLAT BLACK", spray paint. I paint it completely, hooks and all. The paint doesn't last however, but even after a few fish they still work just fine for me. If it's something you really are wanting to make a beautiful job of, DP obviously, along with some others have some great knowledge about what to use, and how to make it last. I usually lose my baits before I need to repaint them rotflmao.

DO NOT use fingernail polish and a sealer coat after you paint it. The sealer reacts chemically somehow and when you go to put it on, your paint becomes tacky and messed up. DON'T USE THESE TWO IN A BING,BANG,BOOM DEAL!!!

he meant the clear fingernail polish, not a clear coat paint thing, they make clear fingernail polish to strengthin nails or somethin like that

ILfisherman, that is what I mean, DO NOT USE THE CLEAR FINGERNAIL POLISH STRENGTHENER...IT RUINS YOUR PAINT!!!!!

Take some sidecutters and cut off the clacker. Thats how I do it.

Well that is a matter of opinion now isnt it Gatrapper? Some people like the clackers, some dont. I personally dont care for them, unless night fishing and even then i'm partial on them, due to the noise and water displacement the buzzbait makes alone without the clacker.

I'm kinda in the air.ever since I fished in Tenn. and I was throwing one with a clacker and I didn't get any strikes....and then I took it off and put one on there that didn't have one and I started catching fish...i kinda lean to the no clacker thing....I don't know. Denny

weird my success ratio has gone way way up since i changed to using a clacker, I love it. I also love the clacker in murkey and choppy water where the fishes vision is obstructed.

I'd suggest the following.... Use a coat of black craft paint, anywhere from 44 cents to 87 cents or so at Wal Mart. It's the smaller bottles in the craft section. First sand the parts lightly to scratch it a little, then use the black craft paint.....after that is good and dry, give it a final coat of black nail polish. The black craft paint will coat the lure and won't let the silver parts show through the polish.

No other coats will be needed.

The tackyness results when you use a Top Coat of a nail hardening polish over a regular polish as the above posts have suggested due to the fact that a lot of the clear polish contains an oil included to strengthen the nails. If the bottle just says Clear you can use it, but if it says Top Coat or Deep Shine, or Hardener, I wouldn't use it.

You can make your buzzbait sound differently by using a square cement nail to change the shape of the holes in the blade. Take the blade off after straightening the wire, then use the nail to punch a square hole where the round ones are.....then re-assemble the bait. It will click a little as the square corners ride around the wire, but won't cause the noisy clatter of the clacker. Found this tip in a book by Homer Circle. Sounds good to me.

I'm sure you will find the black polish over the craft paint to work well. for polish....the cheap stuff works well. I don't pay over a buck

I use Vinyl on all my buzzbaits (I make my own). But you should have a coat or two of white underneath. so i suggest buying the buzzbaits you want to paint black in a pearl or white color if you use vinyl paints.
