What did you Learn in 2008?
I thought this might be an interesting topic.
I personally learned that you will catch your biggest fish whenever you forget to bring a camera. I also learned to trust my insticts and that dock talk before tournaments is just that, dock talk. You can listen to it but in the end you have to win tournaments for yourself.

I learned that I really have no time to fish anymore. Less work on the job= more honey do's and various other reasons not to go.

I learned that sticking a fork into a light socket is bad fishing wise I learned the joy of passing the sport on to my sons who finally started to show a real interest this summer . And I spent a little more time learning some baits and techniques ie.. pitching/flipping and jigs wasn't real good with them before the spring and now I am confident in them , good year fishing wise at least

I learned to slow down my rate of retrieve on big spinner baits for big bass
I was down south with Ed and had the exact same heavy white double tandem spinnerbait, early summer pattern, and he was smokin me on the catch rate, finally he told me to slow it down and it sure helped. |

Yes persistence does pay off. I say that because I finally had success on a swim bait.

I've added the Shakey head to my arsenal in grand fashion this year! It has become a "go to" just like the drop shot when fishing highly pressured waters. I have also learned more about the "fish-head spins" tipped with the regular fluke. As far as crank baiting goes.. the Norman baits in the Nutter's Shad color really gets the nod this year, for me!!
With regard to the new waters that I have been exposed to since moving to Georgia from Texas last year, Lanier has the big spots and lots of them, Allatoona has lots and lots of spots and a few good largemouths, Lake Jackson is a fun lake to fish, Carter's Lake is deep and has some big spotted bass! But the best lakes in the area are in Alabama with Guntersville, Weiss and Wedowee!! This year I hope to familiarize myself with Neely Henry, Lay Lake, Logan Martin and Westpoint.

I learned that you cant get over excited before a trip, expect the worst. If your not catching fish it doesnt mean there not feeding. And I got good at fishing jigging spoons

[quote=BassMoJo;211486]expect the worst.........../quote]
Son, we gotta work on your attitude! The second part of your statement started back in the right direction, but if you start your trip "expecting the worse" then it may never get any better. You've already beaten yourself down with an attitude like that! Always go to the water with a plan, a back-up plan, and an attitude, that no matter what, you're going to give it your best shot! Most of all, never leave the water with a feeling that you've been "defeated" or "outdone". Always try to leave with the feeling that you've had a great day or, at the worst, a good day, regardless of what happens. Fishing is one of the greatest things that God has given us, so enjoy it as it was intended to be enjoyed!

I learned that a joining a bass club was a great thing (I only wish I had done it years ago).
I learned that I do have the ability to place in a tourney. I learned that paying the lawn boy to cut the lawn gives me some time to fish (the lines may not be perfect but at least it is done). I learned that crankbaits are my "go to" bait. I learned that I still have a whole heck of a lot to learn. |

I learned that after 16yrs of not fishing, all it took to reignite my bass addiction was a being on a beautiful body of water one evening with a buddy.....and a three pounder.
I learned I can catch bass bouncing a spinnerbait off the bottom in over 20ft of water.....who knew? |

I learned how to make adjustments when the DNR did a weed kill in every lake in my area reducing the vegitation drastically. I caught far fewer fish, but I learned a lot from that experience. When the weeds did return on a couple of those lakes, I learned how well using a heavier pegged bullet weight and 4-5 inch plastic bait like a peca craw worked when flipping right smack dab into the center of the floating weed mass and allowed to plung through to the bottom! That caught me fish when nothing else would. Also, I experimented with spinnerbaits. I found removing the blades from 3/4 oz. spinnerbaits, and replacing them with blades half the size of the originals allowed me to more easily work deeper water with my spinnerbaits, and catch some nice bass in doing so. I also learned how much better tungstin weights work when compared to lead weights. I hated paying for the tungstin weights, but the difference in feel was amazing.

JB,
My fishing abilities plateaued and for several years there was no improvement. I just kept doing the same things. Once I joined a bass club, it really opened my eyes. I can't say that I have dramatically improved, but I am definately on my way to being better. |

Personally I have learned that it's better to fish with a partner, rather than fishing alone.

I have learned that a gallon of gas in my Ranger seemed to cost less than the gallon I put in my lawn mower...weird. At least that's my excuse for fishing instead of mowing.
I learned that people will run/flock/trample to get to voting booths before they will crawl out of New Orleans during an hurricane. I learned that fish on my home lake are becoming more predictable as the lake gets older. I learned that when i'm at home with the family, i wish i were fishing...when I'm fishing, I miss my family. Can't wait till the kids get old enough to go with me. I learned (from a guy I work with who fishes alot of club tournys) that a single lure in a single color can win tournaments all 12 months. This guy fished the same bait in all 12 club tournys. He won 3 and placed 3rd or better in all the rest except one...won the clubs angler of the year. Thus, I learned it's better to become an expert at a couple bait/techniques than to own every bait that is made.
