Default 100 degree tournament cocktail

as we all know fishing tourny's that last 8-10 hours in 100 degree heat and humidity can leave a lasting effect on you..

in the scorching heat of summer gatorade is your friend.. and well i know i start to drag it about 6 hours into the tourny.. so i come up with a lil something i have been testing the last few months and so far it has worked..

in a large container with a lid.
i mix one 16 oz bottle of "savage" energy drink
and one 32 oz bottle of fruit punch gatorade.
shaken well.

yeah i know the savage has a funny flavor and gatorade is kind a bland but in fact they off set one other very well.-it taste good-

i settled on the savage after trying last year to mix 'ade and energy drinks. trust me some of the mixes i tried were NASTY. though they worked long enough to generally help. the taste want to leave ya lookin to shave your tounge ....

give it a try see if it don't help you all....

Good idea, zook, only I'd strat dragging on it a lot sooner than 6 hours into the tx when it is that hot.

Keeping hydrated!!!

#1 - Start early and drink often. Drink plenty of fluids during the week prior to the tournament. Avoid (gasp!) coffee, tea, soda, and alcohol as much as possible.

#2 - Drink fluids on a regular basis during the tournament. Recommended is every 20 or 30 minutes - even in the morning. Water is good but gatoraide is better or a combination of the two works just fine. I'd go into the science of it but woud take too long. Go to their website (Gatoraide Sport Science Institute) and look it up yourself.

#3 - If you are fishing a two day or more make sure you get plenty of electrolytes in your food. If you sweat it out then replace it. That means chloride, calcium, magnesium, sodium, and potassium. Bananas are not the best source of potassium and are feared on boats. I prefer snack mixes and pickles - yes pickle juice works.

#4 - Learn the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Cool off as needed. You're on a lake....figure it out.

#5 - Check your urine color at the end of the day or in the morning. Orange or brown is definately not a good thing! If you find these colors then refer back to #1 and #2.

Plenty of myths and rumors out there so be careful. I deal with this issue on a regular basis in my non-fishing occupation.

One more thing.

Don't wait until you are thirsty to start drinking. When you feel thirsty, you are already past the point of dehydration.

staying hydrated is key when fishing summer. I can work outside doing masonry in the summer heat with minimal to drink, but something about the water takes it out of me that much faster. I don't know if its the reflection off the water, the added wind, or not moving around much. I have a hard time putting my rod down to pick up a bottle of water, but you really should as staying hydrated keeps your electrolytes flowing and thinking clearly. If you aren't thinking clearly, you could put the wrong color worm on and lose the tourney, or something even worse ............

I've seen many tournament fishermen quit early due to the heat. Another key to keeping cool is to wear proper clothing. There are plenty of companies who make shirts that keep you cool in the summer. Even in 100 degrees. Jean shorts and tournament shirts aren't the best clothes to wear.

I find that stopping to drink or eat while fishing is tough. However, it is a great time to get that drink or food while making a run from one spot to the next, changing lures on a rod, or just anytime you need some time to think about your game plan.

If you come home and are sick from not taking care of yourself while fishing, you will hear about it from the wife! or at least I would hear about it from my wife!

I just thought of something. Drinking water or eating a sandwich while dragging a carolina rig may help slow down the presentation. Seems like the slower the presentation the better the bite is at times.
