NB Great White North
What a great resource this forum has been for me. I am just getting back into fishing, when the 4' of snow melts and the postings here have help me dramatically and made me realize why I loved fishing. As I am starting back up, I need some advise on filling my tackle box. I currently have a few bits and pieces but am starting for the most part starting from scratch. I have recently purchased a Quantum burner baitcast reel and rod and have my older spinner reel/rod. I am looking to spend a little money and would love your help spending it. I am going to be shore fishing for the most part but do have access to a boat. All my fishing will be taking place in Eastern Ontario, great bass fishing in Canada. thanks.

I'm going to assume most of your bass fishing will be small mouth. I'd be loading up on tube baits, top water poppers, suspending jerk baits like the Pointer 100, small to medium size crankbaits, and spinnerbaits. Ask around locally to find oout which colors work best in your area.

Definitely get some some tubes, and tube weights, they're a really versatile bait. Get some spinnerbaits too, 1/4 is a good size. Don't forget to get a few Rapala original and floating minnows. Suspending jerkbaits, like the rouge are good for the buck. Some basic top waters like a spook Jr., Pop-r, and the smaller heddon torpedo's are good for smallies as I hear. Get some yum dingers, and senko type baits too. 5" is the best size. |

Thanks for the information. I will also be fishing for some large mouth. There are plenty of great lakes that are prime bass habitat. Ottawa is only 1 1/2 hour drive to upstate NY, with great lakes

Hey OF, welcome to the site and the forum!
The best bets for smallies where I fish are tubes, dropshot (using 4" or 5" senkos or creature baits or split-tail grubs, etc.) and topwater like the Rebel Pop-R or a super spook jr. The dropshot and the Pop-R work equally well for me on Largemouth, so those are two of my "go to" presentations because I catch a lot of both species that way. I also throw a lot of 5" and 7" wacky-rigged senkos and over 40% of the bass I caught last year came using that method. As the others have mentioned, an assortment of crankbaits and spinnerbaits can be good also. Probably my all-time favorite lure for bass, though, is a topwater frog. I use the Spro Poppin' frog almost exclusively, but there are tons of brands to choose from and everyone has their favorite. Good luck and keep us posted as your arsenal grows and be sure to post pics of your catches! Dean |
