Default 1st bass boat...need some help.

I recently bought an '84 Bomber with a 40hp Mariner. The boat is in very good shape for its age. When I got the boat he allowed me to take it to a shop to get it inspected to make sure everything was working before we finalized the sale. The mechanic said that everything was great but that it could use a new water pump. The new water pump was $150 installed. The boat was running perfect when I picked it up on friday. Started on the 1st try.

I got the boat home and was cleaning it out to get it ready for the water this week. My buddy came over and he was messing with stuff on the console. He pulled the pin on the kill switch and put it back in...just messing around with it. Not 2 mins before that I had turned the key and the motor turned over fine. Since he has engaged and disengaged the kill switch the motor is getting no juice at all.


I thought that there may be a bad position on the kill switch. I unplugged the wires and used another wire to bypass the kill switch and it didnt work. Is there something Im missing? I really hate to drag it back to the shop if there is something simple I'm over looking.

you should never ever start the motor out of water. it can cause alot of damage

Ive only ran it for a very short time with rabbit ears on it and water running. Thats not the problem im having....its not getting any juice to turn the motor over.....more less make it run. Im not even hearing a click when I turn the key.

I have an inline fuse on my 28 horse outboard that every now and again fries. It acts like there is no juice when it does. Always scares the crap out of me for such a small thing.

Its possible fiddling around with the kill yall might have knocked something around and caused a short or that fuse to burn out. Take off the cowling and look there first.

how old is the battery i had to by 3 new batterys when i bought mine

my old johnson had a fuse by the flywheel and it would blow and now and then act the same way, i highly doubt it would be the kill switch, i would look for fuse then move on from there.

Thanks for the responses...


The battery is fairly new. I tested it and it is fine. I did some checking with my voltmeter and I didnt seem to be getting any voltage up front. The only thing in between is an inline fuse. the fuse looks fine but Im going to replace it today to make sure. That is the only fuse I have been able to find. I ruled out the killswitch by bypassing it so I dont think thats the problem.
