New to the forum and need help

I'm new to fishing and don't know what to do,i have been reading lots and it just makes my head spin. Is there just a simple way to learn. I have bought a rod and reel and one for the wife, some lures that we picked out but how do you know whats right. I joined this forum and there is lots to learn here, i guess what i'm trying to say is i don't think the wife will want to fish if we don't catch some fish. It was her idea to start fishing.

You have come to the right place friend... the people here are loaded with excellent information. But to answer yoru question properly, they will need information. Where will you be fishing? What are teh water conditions like? What species do you wish to target? Waht are teh lures that you already purchased?

A year ago I was in exactly the same place you're in now - I'm even from Toronto! I did a lot of reading and this forum has been incredibly helpful. But I think the best thing I did was to hook up with someone who really knew how to fish. I learned more in a day on the water with him than I could have learned on my own in a year (hell, there are some things I picked up from him that I probably would never have figured out myself.) I'm certainly a long way from being an old hand but at this point I have enough practical knowledge and experience to get out there and see for myself what works and why. While all the reading in the world will point you in the right direction nothing replaces time on the water learning you equipment and how a fish feels when it picks up the bait . But welcome to the site and ask away we will do our best to point you in the right direction

Listen (or read), watch and then do....best way to learn anything including fishing. Can't emphasize enough though the latter....nothing compares to time spent on the water.

thanks for your help so far i will try to fill in some blanks. where we are going to be fishing is lake scugog and rice lake. hopefully we can hook some pike,bass and maybe some walleye, we don't want to keep any.

now, start out slowly. this is in the middle of summertime. i know it is probably not as hot up there as down here. but read what some of the folks close to your area are using. don't get upset if oyu don't start out catching tons of fish on your first few trips. this is like any other sport. oyu gotta pratice,pratice,pratice. it ain't always about catching fish either. it's about spendoing QUALITY time with your wife or just enjoying the great outdoors. the catches will come. just have to learn one thing at a time out there. fishing is aobut FINDING what works ion YOUR area and what oyu are targeting. if oyur wife wants to start out catching LOTS of fish, i suggest you get a bobber and some worms and target the bream at first. pretty easy way to start out, i did as a youngerster. then gradually learn the bass tactics. one step at a time pal. rome wasn't built in a day, neither will catching the wall hanger. i ain't got no huge bass on my wall yet and i have been fishing for almost 45 years. haha. take it easy, don't get upset too much and RELAX out there. you WILL catch fish. it just takes time.

I agree that if you feel pressure to just catch fish then nightcrawlers and a bobber should get the job done, you will probably even catch a few bass in addition the the bluegill that you catch. As you start to get more into it and take it more serious you can advace to bigger tackle and try to learn more about bass fishing in general. There is learning curve that you just really can't avoid however the more information you come up with (here is a great place for this information) the quicker you can overcome the learning curve.
