winter or prespawn
Gentlemen,
Question: what is your favorite late winter / early prespawn structure? Do you go to the deeper structure adjacent to known spawning areas NOW or do you lean more towards the classic winter structure? More specifically, at what point do you guys make the move from the standard winter structure to the prespawn structure? Do you always wait until you have a water temp increase or do you base it more on the calendar. At this time of year I am always waffling whether it is too early to hit the areas that are just off spawning areas or to just stay on the winter pattern. Thanks.

Last year I found them on the flats just near the first dropoff during the mid afternoon hours.

Depends on the water temp. Below 50 I'd go with deeper structure. 50+ I'd start looking in deeper water near the spawning flats. Last time out the water went rom 51 in the AM to 54-55 in the PM, and the bite has been better late in the day. Haven't been out in a couple of weeks, though so no idea as to the current conditions.

Definitly make decisions based on water temp. I go deep structure near possible spawning areas in the pre spawn.

Read a book by Jimmy Houston one time and he said the exact same thing: “there is always fish in shallow cover, even cold shallow cover. But those shallower fish are very hard to catch in the cold.” That has been my experience on my home lake too. So the consensus is to not to consider traditional prespawn structure until I begin so see at least some increase in temp. For our lake I guess that would be the creek channels (like I wrote in original post) or just some of our deeper main lake trees. The floor of our lake is completely covered in mesquite and salt cedar trees. Not bushes TREES. Many were flooded within the last 2 years so they are still very full with branches. Groups of larger trees on an otherwise “bowl shaped” bottom is considered structure there. Not many defined drop offs or ledges. No humps at all. Big winding bowl with a snarly as %^&*! Bottom. So structure is a relative term for this lake.
Thanks for the input Men.
