The 8 pound test is actually .012 diameter. So isn't it essentially 12 pound test line? I mean, wouldn't you get the same 'extra toughness' using a standard 12 pound test line?

Different formulas give different strengths. You can have 20 different lines at 0.12 and their test rating can vary from 6 to 20 lb (relating to mono, fluoro or copoly).

The .12 is the lines diameter in inches. It has no direct correlation to the pound test. .16 isn't 16lb test .25 isn't 25lb test etc..

It maybe a little thicker than Comparable Sufix Seige (.11 for 8lb), but like Joe said, the line thicknss not dictate the breaking strength, .12 for 12lb, .15 for 15lb, and so on.
