Opening Day
Well today was opening day for duck season here. We woke up at 1:30 AM and were the first boat out on Lake Miccosukee. By 3:00AM we had gotten to our blind, put out all the decoys, and began to watch the light show from all the other boaters shining their spotlights in meger attempts to navigate the always changing water ways of the lake, not to mention a nice fog rolled in around 3:30AM. 6:30 was shooting time and by 7:00AM we already had 2 ringnecks and a wood duck in the boat. There was a large amount of hunters on the main lake putting pressure on the ducks and forced most of them high and to plantation lakes, plus there was already a lot less then anticipated. After awhile of nothing happening at our blind, around 10AM, we decided to pick up decoys and move closer to the main lake, and as we were doing so[and this always happens] about 10 teal flew in close and cuffed their wings to land, untill they saw us and quickly changed direction and flew away, my stepdad managed to get one of them. We moved in closer and waited and waited for ducks, not much was happening in our area. We ran up into a grassy area to act as a make shift blind, and ant started coming outta the grass so we moved to another part of the grassy area. and liek always, just as we started to reposition a triple flew into our decoys then swiftly flew away upon noticing us. We stayed on the lake till the end of shooting time[around 5:30PM] and ended up getting no more then 4 ducks. My aim was rather awful, i havent been hunting, or even shot my shotgun since 2 seasons ago. So that contributed to our lack of birds. But i did manage a nice shot and wounded one but it got away. Tomorrow we are heading back out there, only not so early, we plan to hunt the afternoon[10AM till end] and see what we can get.
But sure is good to be out there shooting the gun and taking in the scenary again, its been awhile.
